Default NE1 have pics of spkr install?

I'm looking to see if anyone has pictures of this process. I've been told you need to drill out the riveted spreakers, front and back. Plus I was told the back speakers need an act of GOD to remove. I wanted to start, but was interested to see if anyone else has done it. I might be persuaded otherwise.

I was told for the back, you've gotta remove the back seat, as well as the paneling. Along with a bunch of other things. Is this correct? And what speaker depth will fit? Any suggestions on brands?

The rear panels can be removed without taking out the back of the rear seat. I would recommend taking out the bottom of the rear seat for the extra room. To me the a-pillar tweeter was the hardest to remove, all the rest were fairly easy.

go to a dedicated stereo shop, not best buy, with a cd you like and listen to everything they have. find out what you like. pretty much any depth speakers you find will fit back there. youve got like 3" of room.

As NBTurboFreak said you can remove the rear speaker panels quite easily with your hands,
there's no drilling required to replace rear speakers, those have screws on them so replacing those should be simple.

Front speakers I have not replaced, and I've read those do require drilling some rivets.

Hope that helps

Front speakers don't have the screws they have rivets. You'll need to drill them out. Make sure the old rivet doesn't fall into the door as they can be a real pain to get back out. Watch what size speaker you get as the spacers don't like the gas flap/boot release switch. But a little modifying gets the switch back home comfortably

In the rear they are just screwed into a metal plate. You'll find it a lot easier if you remove the rear lower seat, there is no need to remove the rear seat back. The rear cards just pop off and on the drivers side there is the interior alarm sensor button to unclip. Will take approximately 5 mins to remove both rear cards.

I removed the metal housing too, as it's now given me room to put amps and 4 X 8" speakers and 4 X tweeters in there. Reccomend JL audio, Kicker, or if your going cheap C4. Have Fun getting the rear cards back in place, there a real pain in the as s

P.S. The speaker size factory wise is 6.25 not 6.50

I just purchased a set of Polk dB6501's for the front. I haven't tackled the install yet.

In the rear I just installed the Polk dB651 coax. They were VERY easy to install. They were a perfect fit without needing to use the included mounting ring. They do sound nice and clear.

Now if I could just get a day off, I'd be able to get the fronts and my sub installed...

Nice speakers. Where are you mounting the tweeter? What head unit and amp are you planning to utilize?

Thanks people. I think I have the confidence to tackle it myself now. I'll take pictures so I can post them later. Maybe they'll be useful for someone in the future.

Sorry it took several days to get back to NB.org, it's been pretty hectic at work. I'm planning on mounting the tweeters in the factory location. I just need to find the time. I had a 'day off' yesterday, but I still had to go in to work for the day. I'm still undecided on the amp. As for the head unit, I've got a JVC Arsenal KD-ADV6160 http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?pathI...L027426&page=1 What's cool about this piece is that it plays DVD's and I can burn MP3's on a DVD and have a ton of music on tap. Also, the lights match the NB's dash perfectly!

I've got a JVC too, the lights do match perfectly. The blues and reds are perfect. Plus it sounds awesome on factory speakers.

Now that's what I was asking for in the begining of this thread. PERFECT! Now I know what to expect when I try to tackle mine. Do you have pics of the front too? If so, post away. I didn't realize it would be so easy to mount seperates in the back. I was originally going to put just your average 2-way in the back, but after seeing your picture, I think I changed my mind. Again thanks for the pic.

PS

Do the rear or front mounting locations have speaker baffles, or a sealed enclosure? Just curious how the factory speakers respond at the lower frequencies so well.

Will will try to get some pics of the front setup if my door panels behave for me. The car just is sitting in the garage waiting for the motor to be rebuilt. I am running 6.5" RF FanQ comps in the rear and front. I added a 3.5" RF speaker in the dash to utilize the Monsoon stock locations. It is unbelievable how clear and define the music is, maybe not with hard rock, rap, or bass cds. When I would go visit the stereo shop for an upgrade or something, my installer would just sit in the car and admire his work. He said the Beetle, in general, was the best sounding vehicle he has ever gotten to work with in his 15 years.

For the rear tweeters I have some custom covers made to look like the a-pillar tweeter triangle grills that I need to get repainted to match the CC interior and mounted. Where the rear factory mounts is on a metal sheet, the part that is wrapped in dynomat. There is no sealed area or anything.

Here are some pics of my front speaker install:
Please pardon the dirtyness right now, the car has not been on the road for about 11 months at this point.

The door:

The front tweeter:

The dash speaker (in keeping with the monsoon setup):

Those highs must be so CRISP! I had a similar setup in a previous car. 2 pairs of Kenwood separates ([2] - 1 in tweets and [2] 6.5 mids). And for the subs 2 RFosgates 12's. All running off of a 60 x 4 amp. Now I know what you're saying. 240w RMS for all that aint nothing. It was all I needed. I have everything waiting to be put in my bug now, minus the 2 pairs of separates.

I can speak for the rears in that they are open air in the back. They do have a rubber gasket that keeps a more direct path from the surface of the speaker to the grill in the rear panel.

NBTurboFreak - that looks great! What did you use to mount the front tweeter in the a pillar (the black goop)? Could you go into how you did that a little more?

Thanks - Jonathan

Thanks. I had everything done at a stereo shop while I was on a small vacation. The 'black goop' is a special kind of melted plastic, it is not super brittle after being melted.
