Default fuse question!

Hey org'rs, have another question I need a simple answer to!

I am re-installing my system from my old car (which i had a shop do), but i left the amp power cable with in-line fuse int he car for the new owner.

my question:
What size in-line fuse should i be using?
I have a 1000w Kenwood amp powering a single 12" sub.

Thanks everyone

Is it 1000w rms, or peak?

1000w peak I believe. at least that is what it says on the amp!

Any ideas?
I believe it should be a 100... correct?

What I've always done is match up the fuse rating on the amplifier. ie: If the amp has a 40a fuse, then match it. That is, if this will be the only thing fused off this power line. If the amp has multiple fuses, then add them. ie: 3 x 15a fuses would equal 45a. It won't hurt to go over. It's just not neccesary. Just make sure the fuse is as close as possible to the battery. You dont want it inside the car. If it grounds you'll need a fire extinguiser.

I hope this helps.

But for 1000w peak would be about 500 rms. So I would say about a 40a - 50a.

all that was wrong

the fuse is for the wire, not the amp. thats why the amp has its own fuses. the fuse size is detirmined by the size and length of the power wire. go to

http://www.bcae1.com/fuses.htm

for a full chart.

You want the fuse as close to the battery as possible, because all the wire between the fuse and battery is an extreme fire risk, especially in a crash.

no matter what, use the smallest fuse you can without immediately blowing it.
