Default Sound/Vibration Deadening Pics and Procedure Requested

I am installing a 10" sub in a 1ft3 box along with components in the rear deck and front speaker locations (A-Pillar and Lower Door).

I want to have competent vibration control and rattle prevention. I know Second Skin makes a fine product for this.

I would like to know which areas are best treated> I don't want to go overboard, but rattles and buzzes would be a bother.

The amp is 50 x 4 and 300 for the sub.

Any comments, pics, etc will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

well, most products are "deadening" not "dampening" products. for deadeners, check out www.sounddeadenershowdown.com for some great independent analysis. for the dampening... i use 3m scotchbrite pads cut to little squares. the rattles will be from hard surfaces vibrating onto other hard surfaces, so just get something like a felt tape for the edge of your door card where it contacts with the metal of the door, and then just hook everything up and start to address the rattles as they come.

as far as location? keep in mind that these products are designed for competitions where the car is still, so don't begin to think they will help with road noise. what they will do is make your mids more effecient, because the driver will waste less energy vibrating your door. in my old car i did ~250lbs of deadener, all the inside quarters, the floor, the doors, the trunk, everything. the only thing that made a difference was the doors.

companies like dynamat claim 3db gains and stuff from doing the trunk, but it certainly is not the case for our cars. our hatch area is so small that the metal panels are already pretty stiff. i would just get a small amount, 4ft2, and do the door panel where you install your mids, unless you plan to go super crazy overboard.

Sound deadening and sound dampening are terms that are somewhat synonymous in this realm, the object is to reduce as much as possible the level of vibration in a single panel as well as the unwanted interaction between multiple panels or surfaces, one might view this as dampening the vibration in a surface or surfaces thereby deadening it.

I have used a lot of different sound materials over the years and I prefer a combination of liquid and mat for the purpose of reducing surface vibration and blocking noise from entering the domain, I have found that Silent Running SR500 (water based liquid) and Dynamat Xtreme deliver the best results without the nasty odors of those stifling chemical based products.

There are finishing products from Dynamat that also work very well such as Dynaliner which is available in various thicknesses, for absorbing those sound distructive reflective back waves that emanate from subwoofers, woofers and midwoofers, you might find that Deflex pads or Dynasorb pads are very helpful in many applications.

When I did my setup I only had to line the area around the rear 6.5s. I am running a 4x100 for the front and read RF FanQ comps and a bd1000pro for 2 RF T1 12"s. The only rattle I have is from an exhaust hanger.

I have been doing custom cars and competing since 1996. there is a lot of R&D in the product choices.

I use a hybrid of materials...it all depends on how much time and money you want to spend.

For many the "around the speaker" application works well. (usually reduces rattles but not too much road noise)
There is an intermediate step that utilizes 50% COVERAGE on all areas.(reduce road noise by approx 5-15%)
I personally choose to do the 100% coverage option. (reduces noise by approx 15-40%)
But the combo that works the best is using an aluminum faced mat (many make it now but i use RAAM mat, rblox, or dynamat extreme)
and a closed cell foam called ensolite glued on top of the mat.
i can send you pics and help out with procurement if you want.
