Default iPod Usage

Hi, is it possible to connect an ipod to the CD player connector in the console of a new beetle? I guess it would be a 12 pin connector adaptor to a mini jack???

Yup--I used that hook-up.

Have a new i-pod and that doesn't work--let me know--PM--if you want to discuss buying it.

Monster cable

I am wondering the same thing! You probably wouldn't have ipod control at the head unit, BUT as long as there is an audio signal going through, would it work? What kind of cable are you looking to buy? Where do you get stuff like this?

For example, like me, if u have a Monsoon cassette HU w/CD changer in the armrest, and u want to keep the changer, u'll need the $299.99 kit: http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_s...W4RVW6001.html

Note that every other kit is discounted except this one.

Thanks Bill. I'm surprised these are so expensive, I was hoping for a $20 adaptor to the CD changer plug in my armrest to RCA. Oh well, looks like I'll get the tape adaptor for now

It's a lot less expensive if u don't want the cd changer. Don't waste a penny on a tape adapter, it sounds like poop.

That's helpful. I actually don't have the console CD change, but I can see the connector down in there.

how much is the cheaper alternative? and where is that found? i dont care about the cd player the whole part of the adapter for me is to use the ipod strictly if that means the cd will have to go and it will be much cheaper than so be it. which connecter am i going to need to plug into the center console plug that will go directly to the ipod? i dont need the cd player in the trunk to be hooked up still and i dont need direct controls via the stock head unit. i just want to be able to play the ipod through the speakers the cheapest way with a direct connection not a tape/fm modulator.... thanks!

I bought a used Dension "ice>link" adapter on eBay 3 years ago and it's been working great ever since!

I love how you can control the iPod from the stock headunit, so you can keep the iPod in the glovebox.

I do have a tape adapter I use in my winter beater though, and using an iPod while driving just isn't as safe as having it properly wired in and tucked away.

What do you want to do on the iPod that you can't do with the headunit?

It acts like a 5-CD changer and once you get your 5 playlists all set up you really can find anything you need.

its pretty simple.... this is for my gf btw. i have a mazda 3 and before that a scion tc. they both have prewired aux connections in the center console. you buy a 3.5 mm aux cord plug it into the car and then into the ipod headphone jack and wala you have your ipod playing in you car via the aux area of the stereo and it is controled with the ipod not the headunit other than volume. i want this for my gf's beetle but it doesent have a aux connection in there currently. i want to have it exactly like i have my car. isnt there some sort of simple solution for this? i know there is the 12 pin plug in the console so is there a 12 pin adapter for the convertable that is a 12 pin in and a aux out that will work by controlling the ipod manually selecting songs individually? messsing with playlists is not what is wanted. please someone help that knows what im talking about i though i made it clear enough what im looking for in the previous posts

something possibly like this:

http://www.autotoys.com/x/product.php?productid=197

that is what i think i need but i want to confirm that this will work in her 2003 convertable. i can just plug this into the 12 pin connection in the center console and buy the other adapter that goes from the 2 aux cords to a 3.5 mm jack and into the ipod right? once that is done what button do i press to activate the sound on the stereo of the bettle to activate the ipod?

It indicates 1999+ pre-wired which is what the 2003 has (you indicated you could see the armrest changer cable). That should work no problem. You will need the RCA->3.5mm jack, but other than that you'll be good to go. The jack route also allows you to control the iPod volume both via the iPod click wheel and from the head unit itself. This is kind of nice and allows minor adjustments in volume! Only downside of this route is that you would need an alternate way to charge and play tunes.
