I also park in the garage and used to leave my keys in my car. I learned to just turn the radio off until the day I stopped leaving my keys in my car. That was the day a neighbor lady was killed in her home by an intruder that had broken into her garage by figuring out the garage door opener code, taking the keys, duplicating them and coming back to open the door with a key. I don't leave my keys anywhere I can't control them.

One thing I've learned after messing with the electrical system of a Beetle is it is best to not mess with it. The system is sensitive and cutting something can lead to other issues like the computer not responding during diagnostic computer evaluation.

Learn to turn off the radio or remove the keys and place them in the tray or cupholder. Or take them in the house.

Soooo... you want to leave the key in the ignition when you turn it off in your garage?

OK, I can see that. Normally I remove my key and put it on the dash of the cars we keep in the garage. That way when the sirens go off to tell us a tornado's coming, we can get right in and get away...

Why not just turn the engine off, remove the key, then immediately replace it in the lock? Better than diddling with wires and stuff...

Either push the button or pull out the key and then push it back in. How hard is that?

I would take the key out and put it back if you're set on leaving the keys in the car. Last time my husband drove Prudence he didn't quite turn the key all the way off (much less take it out) and I had a dead battery the next morning.

I know in mine the radio stays on for a maximum of 1 hour. After that it automatically shuts off. If this one hour drains your battery, then you either listen to really loud music, or it's time for a new battery. I've never drained my battery like that.

That's the way the ignition is designed, There's only an On and Start turn positions. After it is set to the On position, the Off posisiton because Accessory until hte ley is removed (it clicks pretty loudly when taken out). The easiest thing to do is as said, take the key out and then put it back in without turning it.
