Default Dash replacement speaker suggestions?

I had replaced the dash speakers when I first got my car with some small JBL's, but the mounting depth on the passanger is pretty small, and that panel has never fit flush. Now I am getting really bad sound of that speaker, might have blown, might have a loose connection - but I am ready to replace them.

Anyone have any suggestions for speakers that fit withing the mounting depth of the dash?

(BTW - I relocated the tweeter back to the A-pillar, so I am not too concerned about the tweeter right now...unless that ends up being the problem speaker)

I checked with Crutchfield and they only have suggestions for the door and rear seat speakers...nothing for the dash.

As my NB never had speakers in the dash - could you give me a picture? I know my dash and the depth of it - maybe then I can help you.

This pic won't help much, but the Monsoon system came with two speakers on each side in the dash..they abandoned the A-pillar location, but still left the grill on the a-pillar.

The mounting depth is different for the passenger side and is restricted by the cover for the pollen filter.

If those are 13cm (5")speakers like they are used in a Audi A3 or TT you could get any of these (for example the Bose or Harman Kardon ones if you want to spend that much)

What about the mountings in the doors?

Also: If you are concerned about speakers being to deep (fitting in the width but not in the depth) - below the top cover of the dashboard is another one - if you cut a hole in this one - any speaker fitting concerning the width would fit in there.

I'll have to check the dimensions. Looks like most 4" or 4x6's come standard as just under 2" mounting depth. I need to check the 4" Boston Acoustics to see what their depth is. I know they have a pretty large magnet on them.

As I said - the problem with the depth should be easily fixable by cutting a hole in the cover below the top dashboard cover...

The 2nd cover is about 2" below the top cover I think. Below this cover is another one (this time not a black one - it's silver ) also 2" I thin...

I think the said cover is the cover for the pollen filter, I don't want to cut into that.

I might get a chance to get out tomorrow or Sunday and check it out.

Oh - you might be right with this - but I think only on the right side of the car I believe... Hmmm... Then I'll see whether I can find an article in a Car Hifi Magazine where speakers are tested which are not that deep.

That would be great!

I know the pollen filter is under the passanger side..and that is the side I am having issues with not fiting (depth wise), I already removed a portion of the plastic from the top of the pollen filter panel that I thought was not letting it sit flat. It was a raised brace piece.

Not sure I will be able to get into the dash today or not.

I found some time while letting the leather stuff soak in to my new/old seats.

I have pics and will have to upload later.

I'm still not sure what is going on with that speaker if it is a loose connection or what, but I did find that the C/D tweeters that I installed in the A-pillar were cut and maybe they were making intermediate contact...thus the bad noise coming from that area of the dash.

The mounting depth on the speaker I have installed (JBL 2-way) is 1 3/4" (still have the manual and box for it) -I guestimated that the mounting depth of the dash to the top of the pollen filter is about 1 1/2", thus the sticking up of the dash piece.

Seriously, I have pics and will upload when I get a chance to illustrate.

I'm still searching for the magazine - It was a "Car Hifi" of end 07 with a special article about speakers for the Audi TT and A3 Models (which have similar speakers - realtively small - very low in depth)...

Maybe the speakers are somehow rattling on the cover below? This might sound weird, but my old stereo used to make my rear number plate rattle so damn bad - I just took some felt knobs (hope this is the right expression - I'm meaning those round self sticking knobs you put under chairs or other furniture so they don't make deep scrapes in wooden floors or soft tiles) and just stuck them under the number plate (sticky side on the plate) - this stopped the noise pretty good. Maybe you could try this - doesn't cost much (less than a $), doesn't break anything and gives you a conclusion wheather it's really the membrane (or the speaker itself) or the speaker making some noise on the plastic below...

I didn't notice any loss of sound from that side this morning, that splice might have fixed my sound issue, but if you can find that mounting depth article that might help me out in the long run.

I am embarassed to say that when I went looking for the OEM speakers...must have lost them in the move...I found another JBL identical to the one that is installed in the passanger side. My only thought is that I had some JBL 3 or 4" speakers left over from a previous system and the passenger side must have blown so I put this larger speaker in its place. I was too tired/had stuff to do so I never lifted the the driver's side up to see what was hiding under there.

I finally found the magazine I had in mind. There's a test of several 13cm (5") speakers - the bad thing is - the mounting depth of the woofers is to big

But (and here's the catch ) the magazine offers a search engine on their website where you can specify what speakers you are searching for - though you'd have do pay to view the tests of the found speakers - but it shows a result.

If you'd tell me the max dimensions for the speakers - I'd feed the search engine with this data and crosscheck the results with the ranking table in my mags.

Antoine -- I currently have 6.5 's on my dash - I did construct spacer out of mdf --- in the SQ comp car I had 8's on the dash -- 6 x 9 "s are the best !!! -- just get some 1/2 or 3/4 mdf and cut some spacers - take your time and dont get cut --- take care -

I replaced my dash speakers with some RF 3.5" and I had no clearance issues. They ended up being mounted to the bottom cover.

Here are some pics of my stereo setup.

I got some Pioneer's that were supposed to be designed for low clearance dashes. Have to see if I can find them or get the model number for you. I seem to remember them being discontinued and that might be why I didn't come back and post the model.
