Default ipod In car Cassette Adapter

I've bought myself a rather swanky ipod holder that fits perfectly into one of the cup holders (picture to follow). My thoughts were to play the ipod through the stereo via a standard cassette adapter although when I tried this no sound was coming out??

This setup works fine in my Girl Friends Polo so I know its not the adapter?

I tried adjusting the volume etc but no joy?

Any thoughts?

Is there a volume control on the power plug? Is the tape wire plugged into the power plug or the Ipod (if latter is an option, plug it in there). Other than that, maybe make sure the lid on the tape deck can shut at least halfway? I have had about three or four tape adapters, the ones with thick wires usually don't work (in this case, though, the tape deck spits them out right away and complains "ERROR." Sometimes, I could fish the wire behind the end of the plastic flap (then again, this has also landed me with a jammed door a couple times. So, stick with the thin wired tapes or maybe an FM transmitter. I have tried both (several brands) and there is always background hiss (maybe just my car?). Best option would be wiring a direct input jack.
