Default OEM Satellite Radio Retro-fit?

Hello everyone,

I've got a 2000 Beetle that's currently sporting a non-Monsoon tape deck. Ickkkk! Not for long, though. I've just purchased an OEM non-Monsoon CD/MP3 head unit from a late-model NB that's satellite radio ready.

I've been an XM subscriber for years and plan to continue to be, and I'm salivating at the prospect of being able to rid myself of another piece of aftermarket dashboard clutter.

So I've been shopping around for an OEM XM receiver to go with my head unit. I need an expert's advice, though -- which one to buy? I've seen some listed as Audi/VW, some listed just as Audi. They look identical, but have different part numbers.

What's the difference between, say, a 4E0-057-593-A, and an 8E0-057-593-A? Will an Audi model work in my VW? What sort of cabling and antenna will I need to install this to the head unit, and would these things be available from the dealer or elsewhere? Where is the receiver mounted in a newer beetle, and are any special brackets needed?

Thanks for reading, hopefully someone can give me a few pointers!

I think you need the in dash radio with the SAT button, the Sirius or XM module and a sat antenna(should work under the center dash panel but on the roof might be better).

The XM is not built into the radio.

Unhappy Sattelite Antenna

Hi,
I just bought a used 2007 new beetle with an mp3/cd sat ready and the antenna was broken off. No big deal, I'll get a replacement; since it was not due to defects in materials or workmanship.. The previous owner went thru a car wash...
Yikes, $600+ for the OEM with integrated Am?FM and sat antenna.
This is what I was quoted... If anyone knows of a better deal, let us know! I am going to try JB weld on some kind of epoxy.

Biggest problem is the wiring between the radio and the satellite box. It's NOT a separate part number, but is rather a part of a general harness on the cars fitted with this.

There are two connections, i.e. power and communication.

In addition, this installation is designed for the canbus system fitted on the latest Beetles. Not sure this is a problem with retrofitting, as getting a cable specially made will be the biggest problem.

The sat receiver is OE mounted on a bracket to the firewall behind/above the passenger side underdash cover.

Sure, just look up the antenna here.

$300 is more like it.

Smile Thanks a Million

Thanks for the website! Way better than 600USD and the JB-weld idea is going very slow and ugly.

Thanks for the insight, lkchris.

It's looking like it's just a matter of wiring up a custom harness for the satellite radio..

I've run into a snag, though, as the radio I bought ended up being a Monsoon unit after all, so I'm getting nothing at all through my speakers. I know you can tweak them with a vag-com so you can use them in non-Moonsoon cars like mine..

My question now is, since the stereo is from a can-bus car, will I be able to modify it with a vag-com in my car? That is, is the older k-line data connection still active in the newer stereo?
