Default Stock head unit - speaker short circuit, even when no speakers attached?

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a stock CD/MP3 head unit from the forums here. Plugged it in and fired it up, but it was coded as a Monsoon unit and my NB isn't a Monsoon. So I got nothing from the speakers, as I expected, and decided that this was as good an excuse as any to invest in a VAG-COM so I could recode the radio.

So, several weeks later, my cable finally arrives, and I plug it in.. Bingo, the radio goes into diagnostic mode and I recode the radio from 06033 to 06403. Now, I turn it on and the display no longer flashes "monsoon', but there's still nothing from the speakers. Hmmm.

So I snoop around a little more, and find the the radio has thrown 3 fault codes -- 00852, front loudspeakers short circuit, 00853, rear loudspeakers short circuit, and 00855, CD changer communication problem.

The last one makes sense, since I have no changer installed, so I recode to 06401 and check the codes again.. the changer code is cleared but I still have the front and rear speaker short circuit codes coming up. Clearing the codes brings them back up immediately, and the same thing happens when I have the speakers completely disconnected.

My old head unit worked flawlessly, and I've never messed with the speakers or the wiring at all.. Is there something I'm missing, or did I get hosed with a fried head unit?

Any advice would be appreciated.. Thanks a lot!
