Angry Monsoon CD Player - "CD ERR"

I have an '05 Beetle with a Monsoon single CD radio. The car has almost 80K miles on it and is therefore out of warranty. A month or so ago, the CD player stopped working. It loads the CD and appears to try to read it. After about 30 seconds, the CD ejects and the message "CD ERR" appears on the display.

If I hold my ear against the dash after loading the CD, I hear a "click" or whining sound followed by three very soft clicks. This repeats four or five times until the CD ejects.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and know of a fix (short of replacing the radio!). Is there a belt that drives the CD player that perhaps is broken? I've not yet tried pulling the player out, but would appreciate instructions on how to do that as well.

Thanks!

Stupid question first, is the disk damaged?

You could try running a CD cleaning disk, compressed air, etc. to see if that may help.

To remove the radio you'll need the keys to do that, radio shops (such as www.enfigcarstereo.com) sell them.

Hi, thanks for your post. I've tried multiple CDs and all result in the same error, so it doesn't appear to be CD related.

When you say the "keys"... are you referring to a tool to remove the radio? I've seen some posts online regarding a blade which is inserted into the two slots on each bottom side of the radio face. Is that what you're referring to?

Thanks again for your post.

Exclamation "keys"

I just bought my removal tools at amazon for like $4.95 and they got here in like 2 days. Amazon rocks!
I also wired up the AUX input for my MP3 player.
I actually bought an '05 CD unit for my '02 and it worked beautifully, sorry to hear about your woes.
