Default security code issue

My non-monsoon radio (2000GL) has a broken faceplate and I am buying a used radio from eBay ("new condition"). I do not know if the new radio will arrive with the code. My understanding is that if I do not have the code for the new radio, I will have to go to the dealer and pay a service charge to have them find the code from VIN number.

I do have the code for the old radio. Question: Does the code reside in the faceplate circuitry or on the radio main circuit board? The two pieces are easily separated.

My thought is that if the code is stored on the main circuit board, I can simply pop off the new front panel and snap it on the old chassis; then use the old code to activate the radio.

If however, the code resides in the front panel circuitry, I may have to go to the dealer and have the new radio programmed. I am hoping the code comes with the new radio.

Any thoughts or comments?

Thanks

Dave

In April I purchased a used radio from a member here. He gave me a great deal since 2 of it's buttons were busted. He also provided the code.
I didn't have the code for my own radio, and it was on the way out anyway.
I just did the swap the other day, keeping the face of my radio, and using his 'box' and his code. Ergo, the code goes with the main radio, the metal box.
Good luck with the swap, it's easy, just a few little screws and plastic tabs. Just don't do it in the cold and be very gentle with that plastic. Are you all set with radio keys? I got sent the wrong ones and had to improvise with sawblades
P.S. Are you Polish?
