Default Beetle radio no reception

I recently bought a used 2000 Beetle (TDI - stick) with an OE radio.
While the CD player and the cassette deck work great, AM/FM reception does not work, since I bought the car.
The AM/FM display works. I can only hear minor noise out of the speakers (engine off, radio full loudness) and suspect an antenna problem.

The antenna is connected to the radio, I checked.

I read in another thread the antenna has an amp. Where would I find the antenna amp in the car?
Are there any known field problems with AM/FM radio reception?
How to R&R the antenna?

Thanks for every response.

Do a search of 'antenna' in this forum (car audio) and you will come up with a lot of threads on this subject. You may find this one quite interesting: http://www.newbeetle.org/forums/show...hlight=antenna
