Default LF speakers inop - never answered

Hi, I'm a new beetle owner. I have a problem with my left door speaker and the left a-pillar speaker not working. I did a search and found many people with the same problem, but I cannot find where anyone knew of the cause. I did the basics and checked the connections at the speakers and checked the wiring. I also hooked up different speakers and they did not work either. Everything else works fine, it's just these two speakers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

No idea. Is this a monsoon radio or standard?

Try checking the continuity of the wires.

I'm new to the Beetle thing, so I'm not sure which radio I have. It is an AM/FM/Cassette w/ CD changer controls but no CD player in the back. It also has small speakers in the front A-pillars. How else would I know?

Also... a couple other problems I noticed that are probably related. The interior lights do not come on when the drivers door is opened and the white/red light on the door panel does not come on either. The lights work fine from the passenger door. Everything else on the door works OK (gas and hatch release, pwr windows/locks, lamp on door lock, etc).

I did some research and it seems the problem w/ the interior lights is probably a bad drivers door micro-switch. I can't imagine that this has any relation to the speaker problems...?

I would imagine I have a connector problem somewhere, just not sure where to start.

Thanks for any help you could give me. This is a great site and I'm learning more and more everyday.

Mike

Mike -

Please update your usercp to include the year/engine/tranny of your car. Also, is it a hardtop or a vert. It helps to know something about your car so we can give a better answer rather than a shotgun answer.

I can answer that the red/white reflector at the bottom of the door doesn't come on because it is a reflector and not a light. Now that might not be true on all models though. I know it was true from 98 - 01. My 06 has a red reflector - no light in it either.

You can identify if your car has a monsoon radio vs a non-monsoon if there the word "Monsoon" is on the radio or when it first turns on, it says Monsoon where the station numbers come up. You can also open your trunk and pull back the cover over the spare and look toward the left rear tail light (you need to stand on your head and look. If you see a small black box (about 7x6 or so), then that is the Monsoon amp. Check the wiring there because its possible the speaker wire has come loose there.

The other possibility is you have a fuse out. Use a flash light and look at each fuse to see if something is out.

You've already connected another speaker and no sound comes out. I'm assuming you have done the obvious and made sure the balance is shifted to the left to make sure something is supposed to be coming out. I know that's obvious but I thought I would ask at least.

If you don't have a monsoon, then the only other thing would be to pull the radio and check the connections. If still no joy, then I would say the radio is no good. You can pick up a new radio with the safe code from pretty cheap.

Oh, be sure to check the fuses on top of the battery just for fun.
