Replacing the radio is the best answer. There are some for sale or have been some for sale in the parts and accessories forum if you want to stay with the OEM look. Or try ebay. Just make sure the seller supplies the code.
The other option is to get an aftermarket radio from Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) making sure to get one that specifically fits your car and the harness necessary to keep from cutting any wires (do not cut any wires). They can also sell you a trim piece that will fit the opening quite nicely. If you go the aftermarket route, keep your old radio even though it is stuck in safe mode. You will need it if you ever have to go to the dealer and they have to hook up their diagnostics computer to your car. They won't do it without an OEM radio (again - don't cut any wires).

You can buy a new radio for around $40 shipped so why buy a used one. Go to www.1stvwparts.com and click on Part Number Look up, look up part number 1C0035157C.
I just replaced the radio in my 99 with that one and it works fine. Even comes with a code.

You have an understanding dealer. The vag-com (RossTech or anything not the dealer's) don't seem to have the issue. Several dealerships can and do refuse to scan a car with an aftermarket radio since they have no way of knowing if the infamous "K-Wire" is hooked up incorrectly. This is why Crutchfield is a good source for the aftermarket radio and related harness parts. They have a product that will keep you from screwing up the K-Wire.
There have been numerous confirmed cases of VW dealerships ruining their expensive VAG computer because the K-Wire is connected to a hot line. This is why they can and do refuse to scan. Go to the FAQS on http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_4.html and read the aftermarket radio problem. |

I placed the order earlier today. But the more I think about it I'm wondering how it can be so cheap for a new radio? Is it a rebuilt one I wonder? Considering how expensive getting any real VW part from a dealer costs, I can't wrap my head around this price!

I received the radio yesterday. Sure enough, it's new! Dropped by my local stereo shop and asked the guy if he would pop the old one out. He did, so I slipped him $10.00. Thanks again for the tip, what a great deal. I got the whole thing in the dash for under $50. I'm happy
