Default Volume Control Normal???

My '03 NB has a Monsoon with a volume knob that takes a lot of turning to get any response. Also it only turns so low and then says MIN. Can I change this setting? AND Is it normal to have to turn the knob several rotations just to lower or raise the volume?

The MIN indicates that you have turned it as low as it will go, I assume the opposite direction will ultimately indicate MAX. Why would you want to change this setting? And to what?

It does sound as if you have a rheostat switch (volume control) issue. For repair info on your head unit, go here for a similar issue and resolution suggestions.
WANT TO BUY Turbo S headunit

...because it's a pain in the rear to have the radio beep and then not go below a certain volume. Let me ask you a question, why would you want a feature like a MIN volume control? Is there a risk in turning that knob down too far? I still don't get what they are trying to achieve. And there isn't a MAX volume limit, which I could possibly see as beneficial to prevent hearing loss. Maybe I could trade you my radio???

Someone else in the know said that VW had a different company building there radios for awhile. Therefore, some of the later models had these characteristics. I forgot the details but he answered fully the volume question, but I can't find the post...

Maybe I didn't understand. Rereading, I guess you are wanting to adjust the volume of the volume when the radio says MIN. When mine says MIN there is NO sound.

As to manufacturers, Monsoon Premium systems have always been Delco Electronics (aka Delphi), was a trade name owned by Delco Electronics, although the Monsoon systems are no longer. I'm going to have to do a little research but I believe the standard systems are also of Delco Electronics. Indicated on the Radio Head label, in addition to the VW p/n, as a "DE" part number. I did recently read where Clarion may have also produced some factory units, but have not been able, or even attempted, to confirm this. 6cd Changers were probably manufactured by Pioneer for Delco, as this has been the norm, even preceeding the advent of the NB. Delphi is also a major player in the Sirius game.

I am working on a Complete Gude to Factory Audio Systems in a thread of the same name, that I am past due to update.
The COMPLETE GUIDE to Factory Audio Systems!
Any information anyone has to add is appreciated. Especially any information related to adjusting settings. I have some information that has been added to that thread that I have not explored, and may contain some of your answers.

I think Clarion was the other company along with Delco, I don't recall which was the better of the two. This was all answered in detail back when I originally asked the volume question. I searched the word volume and couldn't find anything else.

The thing with the MIN is it isn't that low. It is really sort of medium volume. Then it beeps and unless you turn it back up, it will give you no sound. To me that's just annoying. And still...for what purpose? I can't comprehend what benefit you get. In my other car, it is easier to turn down the radio instead of turning it off and it is nice to have that option.
