right now my 2004 NBC has the factory monsoon system. CD changer in the console, the unit also has a cassette player
(why I dont know)
Anyway I don't own cassettes anymore and really would rather use my Ipod than CDs.

I would love suggestions as to what to replace it with.

Most aftermarket decks have input jacks to use your iPod or other music player. I just have a basic (5 year-old) Alpine CD tuner. I orignially had a 6 disc changer which just looks nice in my trunk now. My iPod/iPhone use the changer connection now. The sound the Monsoon is able to put out with just changing the deck is amazing! If you've installed decks yourself before, this is a snap. If you aren't handy with installs you might find a friend. I'm not a big fan of stereo shops doing the work as they don't take the pride, or time, they should to make sure the installs are right. I've heard horror stories (especially with our NBs and other VWs).

Crutchfield is a good source for aftermarket decks as they will provide you with everything you need with the purchase including: removal keys for the Monsoon deck, the new mounting adapter/sleeve, and new deck to OEM wiring harness.

Good luck

You can also get a casette adapter for about $20. The casette part plugs into your casette player and it has a wire that plugs into where you plug in your headphone. You could even do this as a temporary measure until you find the perfect aftermarket stereo. There's also the option of getting an FM converter for your ipod. I'm doing the casette thing since I don't even have a cd player and can't really afford a new deck, since well I had to take out a loan to buy my pretty little car!

I have the fm converter but hate having wires all over the place, not to mention the issue of a loose IPod sliding around.
Will check out Crutchfield. I am a tried and true Alpine fan. And have installed them myself since I was 16 ( the one time I had CC install one I swore I would never let someone else install one again)

I just let the factory radio in and i'm gonna wire the ipod to the cd changer port on the back of the radio with a Blitzsafe adapter. Probably mount my ipod on the vase mount. Cheaper that way

Default I have the Dive adaptor

It works great... All you have to do is remove the radio and plug it in the back. CD quality... $140 and it charges the IPod at the same time..... Kills two birds with one stone.
