Default So this week I found out...

after detailing my stereo, (aftermarket)
I found this week that the idiot that installed it didn't like "mount" it inside the area the stereo goes.. it basically means I can pull the whole stereo (cd player) deck out and back in the slot there, and it moves around freely back there...

How bad is this?? I mean yeah my cds skip a little more then a normal one would I'm assuming. But is there risk of wires being damaged or heat or anything like that???

I just really cant afford a new stereo right now, and I don't want to be without my music. I might go crazy or something...

Help
thanks
Kate

Why not just take it back to the idiot who did the installation and make him finally screw it in properly? It doesn't seem like it'd be that big a deal; he won't try to charge you for it or anything (unless he's truly brain-dead).

Problem with that is.. I bought this beetle a year ago, from a dealership in Phoenix AZ, which is about a 3-4 hrs drive from me, and I'm also out of warranty. I'd love to hear the service department try to argue stating that I did it myself or that I can't prove it was like this when I bought it...

Do I need to get this fixed asap?? It doesn't come out or move around too much. That's why I only just noticed it when giving my car a super deep clean this weekend finally..

Hi,this is happy's hubby(i must register an ID lol)
Any pics of how it's fitted??Maybe the cage needs tabbing,or tightening.(This is what I do,so a look might tell me)

The chances of it moving about enough to do damage is unlikely,as there's not too much in the way of sharp metal objects back there.and it being loose in and out shouldn't be skipping cd's.

Hope this helps!

The only reason I can think of that the radio wasn't mounted properly was the the installer either didn't have the proper kit to mount (or didn't know he needed one?).

Either way, the only way to get the radio properly mounted is to get a mount kit for it. Basically, that is something that will fit in the space in the car where the radio goes, and that the radio will attach to.

Did you check the wiring to make sure that's ok? If he did such a crap job on mounting the radio, I fear he may have done a just as good job on the wiring...

The wiring is all good. And it's been like this for over a year now... Not that the cds skip, but if I go over a very big bump it does.. I mean yeah that will happen with any cd player I know.. but I couldn't help but think its because it's not properly mounted. Basically you take the plate off you can pull the whole deck RIGHT OUT.

There are no clips, no metal mounts, nothing framing the deck.

This isn't what my stereo Looks like, but it's kind of a comparisson I found online to show my problem... I dont know much about stereos, I just thought they should be like mounted/grounded or like fitted in another metal case/frame so it's sturdy or actually stuck to the inside area there?

Red's stereo was missing the screws that hold it in. the interesting part is that i didn't even notice it until i was installing an aftermarket stereo. lol. i guess i wouldn't have noticed figuring all i had was a tape deck anyway. oh and you can buy the kits from crutchfield. if you buy a stereo through them, they send you it for free. so i assume you can buy it for pretty cheap

The picture is actually of the stock stereo, and that will just click right in. Notice the radio keys being used to pull it out? That's so you release the latches holding it in. Better post a picture of how your aftermarket stereo is.

Basically there are no clips/screws/keys or anything. It just slides right in and sits there... I dont have a home computer so it's hard for me to get a picture on here for you guys. I was just wondering if I should worry about wires getting hot/stereo damage etc. But it seems I maybe am just being a little over-worried until I get a new one installed.

Kate,
Duct tape is now available in many attractive colors not just the old silver grey...

Seriously, what kind of stereo is it?
How did they match it up to the Beetle's radio opening which is kind of ovally-curvy (I did not just make that up! It is a Bauhaus school of design term

It should probably have a cage that slides into the space and is held in by prongs. Then the stereo slides into that and clicks in with spring tabs (those are what the radio removal tools compress so it can be pulled back out). Sounds to me like the cage was never installed.

Happy's hubby may be able to give some insight as to whether or not the cage can be obtained. The original one probably went in the trash with the box.
