There is a thing you can buy to plug into the cigarette lighter area that uses a 9 volt battery. It will keep computer (and radio) settings while you disconnect the battery. They are fairly cheap but not many parts area persons know them, even though they may have it in the back somewhere. NAPA auto parts is a good place to start.

I got mine at NAPA. Works great. They had one in the back, but could not remember the name in order to find it. Took about 15 mins to locate, but they did have it.

Yep! Pretty much.

I plugged it in and then disconnected my battery. It even ran the radio while I was cleaning the car battery terminals.

Ah, back to the OP question - many folks have found the radio code on a sticker either in the trunk/spare tire area or it may be written in the owner's manual.
Good Luck!

Actually, if the radio is the original that came with car and has never been removed, it should not enter safe mode if you disconnect/reconnect the battery.

I disconnect/reconnect Cowboy's battery when I work on it and it has never entered safe mode once.

My 2000 is the same way. It never asks for the radio code.
