We just bought a 98 beetle and the radio is pretty shot. It only gets am for a moment or two and then says Error on it. My daughter would like to put something in that she can attach her ipod to. What is compatible or recommended?

I think most aftermarket headunits are fine as long as you hook them up correctly. When I got my '99 it had a Blaupunkt headunit in it. Standard CD player with aux input (but from behind the unit so that was a paiiiin). I replaced that with a Sony unit that has aux input on the front. Its been working great for the past few years. Not sure about iPod hookup, since I have a regular mp3 player though. But I know if you go to Best Buy and all, the units will say if they can take an iPod.

u can either use an aftermarket radio with a aux connection...which would be compatible with any device with a headphone jack...
or you go with a unit that is specifically ipod combatible. this means that it not only charges the ipod while you play...but youll also use the radios buttons to navigate the ipod..meaning you can put the ipod in the glovebox so no one knows its there alpine, kenwood, and pioneer all have great interfaces for this.... in my experience sonys and jvc have poor interfaces... alpine is great..however overall id probably go with a kenwood or pioneer...most offer more lines of display on the radio..so you can see more infomation like your ipod readout would be...they will also give you better sound adjustments then the alpine(for the equal price) which youll find very useful in the beetle. i can suggest specific models if need be...good luck |

I don't know much about aftermarket head units but I do have a factory Beetle radio For Sale in perfect condition and an ipod adapter that will charge the ipod too. It gives awesome quality. This way you can retain the nice blue and red lights on the radio and the factory look + use you ipod. I'll sell both for $120 with free shipping. if you interested at all just pm me. Thanks!
