Easy check to find out which lead is positive, connect volt meter to both speaker wires, if you get the - symbol on your voltage reading you are reversed on your voltage, reading should look something like this. 015 V not - 015V. of course I'm sure you already know this but it's a simple check.

To be honest with you, I don't think, (I could be wrong)that if you do NOT have a Monsoon stereo system in your car stock, That the regular stock stereo system in the NB has ANY type of amp in it. Some previous owner or something could have installed one, but I am pretty sure it did not come that way.
I would also think that if there was an aftermarket amp installed in the car, they would have switched out the deck too though. Why would you put an aftermarket amp in a car that has a stock stereo?
Only a Monsoon stereo came stock from VW with amplifiers.

Yeah. Monsoon setups have a seperate amplifier, but the non-monsoon ones are just built into the head unit.

if you have monsoon, it'd be in the left side of the trunk behind the trim panel. pull out the piece that you would remove to change the tail light and you should see it.

do you have tweeters in the dash or the door? monsoon had 'em up top, base stereo was in the door.
