Default cd changer not recognized

I picked up a vw factory cd changer out of a wrecked beetle ( trunk mount ) and it plugs into my wifes 01 trunk connector and when i press cd on the radio/cassette it says " no cd changer "

I decided to probe the wires going back to the cd changer and with a digital meter im not showing any current coming back to the unit.

Can someone tell me the color of the pwr. and ground for the plug for the trunk cd changer ? If someone has one can they tell me if it has power going to it with the key on ?

I believe you need to connect a VAGcom and adjust the radio block to accept the cd changer. That had to be done on my 99 when I added the changer.

I AM ALMOST POSITIVE that you DON"T need a VAGCOM for this. Maybe, but I doubt it.
I had this set up once and you should be able to plug the CD changer in, and go. BUT I seem to ALSO remember that there was a setting on the stereo deck that you had to use .....

You may have to push the CD button twice, to get to the AUX mode, or if the stereo buttons have an AUX mode use that.
I am trying to remember, because it has been a few years.
I had an 03 NB that had the Monsoon system with a cassette deck in it, after I had owned the car for a few months I bought the 6 disk CD changer that you mount in the trunk. If I remember correctly, I think you had to push the CD button twice or something in order to get to the AUX mode. Maybe not, but I seem to remember something like that. Somebody with this setup, chime it here and help me out please.... This is not an uncommon setup for a NB.
My 05 NB has the single disk CD in the Monsoon deck on the dash now, not the cassette, so if I were to buy the Phatbox or the CD changer for the trunk, I would have to use the AUX button on my stereo deck.

If all else fails, and someone else on here cannot chime in and help, go to Crutchfield.com and look up the CD changer that you have on their website. They sell them for the NB and they should have an installation guide on the site somewhere for you. The brand name may not match, but the actual setup is EXACTLY the same. I know this because I bought my CD changer from them for my 03. Good Luck!

i went out and tried it and no luck, it wouldnt give me any aux. mode. I looked thru my owners manual for the radio sys. and it didnt show any option to access a aux. mode on the radio.
Does anyone live near louisville, KY. with a NB ? I would like to hook the changer up to someones NB to see if it works or not.
I tried hooking 12v directly to the red and black and i tried the red and brown wires coming out of the pigtail on the changer and it still wouldnt do anything. Only problem is i dont know if those are the correct wires to test it...

Just to cover the bases, did you pull out the deck and make sure the cable for the changer is fully connected?

it's not gonna power up until you adapt the factory radio to accept it.

find someone with vagcom/vcds or pay the dealer $20 to have a tech run out and do it on a smoke break.

I bought a used changer for my wife's Jetta shortly after we bought it new. Mounted it in the bracket, plugged it in and it worked--no further messin' around at all. I don't see why VAGCOM is necessary...

wifey's is a monsoon right? if so, monsoon radios came pre-programmed to accept a changer or the single-cd addon as most dealers added one or the other right off the rip.

beetles on the other hand, some need to be programmed to accept it, especially in the earlier models and 03-05 for some reason. just what i've found.

What year model bug are we talking about here? I know that you need a vagcom for the 98 but I think starting in 99, you didn't. I've installed bunches of these for friends and not needed a vagcom but for my 98, I had to have the dealer do it.

The basic trick has always been turn off the radio, remove the key and then plug everything in. Turn on the key and then power up the radio. If you get a changer error, turn the magazine around and make sure you have at least one CD in it.

It is possible the cd changer is bad. it does happen.

Well, it's a GLS, but it does have the auto and the cold weather pkg. Her heated seats continue to work awesomely after 8+ years and she uses hers alot--what's up w/ that? My TS never worked well.
