okay i found some speakers but i'm not sure if they have enough wattage for the car. I called volkswagan and they couldn't tell me is there anywhere on or in the car that says the wattage? oh and the speakers i want are Kenwood - 6-1/2" 3-Way Car Speakers.they are 180 watts max power.

If you don not have the monsoon sound system then I can help you. In a non-monsoon system the radio puts out 20 watts max power which is about nothing. I would think to get nice sound with the speakers you chose you would need an amp. I would say go with factory speakers again or get aftermarket speakers with high sensitivity rating and low power rating( the lowest you can find) If you want to go with factory speakers then I would sell you some. Good luck!

factory peak is 20wx4ch.
gotta upgrade the deck before any speaker is gonna sound good. but anyhoo, a good 3-way speaker will work fine, and if you wire it right, the factory tweeter will still work. monsoon cars have a luxury of the external amp, but i think it started in 2001.5. haven't seen it prior to then. also, monsoon amps run at 8ohm and 2ohm instead of 4ohm, BUT i've never had an issue rockin' 4ohm speakers with them, though the back sounded flat (the 2ohm channels) and the fronts had plenty of punch. in my monsoon jetta, i have tang band midbass in the front door, some off-brand home audio poly dome tweets, and in the rear door, 6.5" tang band subs, all off the monsoon amp. deck is a kenwood mp435u, it lights up oem colors. if you're audio-inclined, make your own component speaker kit, it'll be cheaper and sound better. otherwise, go to best buy and listen at their stuff.

thanks! this helped alot! my goal is to try and get it to sound like my Alero's sound system
. But of course my alero is three years newer. but for having stock speakers it has amazing sound. I just wanted something like that for my beetle too. |

ok.
i believe all monsoon systems had speakers in the dash. so if you have speakers in the dash facing upward to the windsheild then you have the monsoon system. if you just have rear speakers...door speakers and tweeters in the sail panel above the dash then you have a regular system. you also will not get ur system in the beetle to sound like like your alero unless you add a sub of some sort...or do some major additions to the panels and doors to seperate the negative wave from the positive. (essentially build a box in each location) which just isnt plausible. so either except that you cant do it...or drop the money on a new radio...4 channel amp....and new speakers....and youll come close to what you want...or go all the way and add a sub and amp too. if you dont want to get into replacing the radio and adding amps and such...then your best option is to accept it will never equal your alero system. your factory system is at most pushing 11 - 13 watts rms. which is constant wattage. never go by max ratings...go by rms. and on top of that im pretty sure the front speakers are wired in the factory as a component system...which means the door speakers get the lower frequencys to play and the tweeters by the windsheild gets the higher frequencies. so even if you put in a 3 way set of speakers...u wont be getting much from tweeter in the door...if anything. |

CONTINUED>>>>
so your best bet is to go with factory replacements or coaxial or at most 2 way speakers. if you go with aftermarket speakers youll most likely need speaker spacers...metra makes them for applications like dodge neon doors...u can cut off the tabs and use them on your doors...u need them because most speakers will have too deep of a magnet structure to fit without hindering the window. i used those to start...but changed over to homemade mdf 3/4 inch rings... also if your having someone else do the install make sure they are prepared to drill out rivets which attached the factory speakers to the door panel.....(which have a spacer built onto them) |

if you think at some point you might change your radio then id go ahead and get a set of speakers with a slightly higher rms rating...ill follow this response with a list of speakers to check out..
the best thing to do would be to replace the front door speakers and dash tweeters with a component set of speakers...but unless you add the radio and amp i doubt it would make much of a difference...so dont waste the money. if you go with factory replacement the biggest issue youll have is that it will be difficult to install...because the orginals use rivets not screws....and im not sure how much room is between the panel and the window behind it...so you dont wanna use to long a screw and mess up the window. |
