There is a dash kit you have to buy that fills in the edges of the circular part. Thankfully, my car came with one already. Unfortunately, the headunit in there now is less than stellar and its replacement is ready to go in whenever i can get the new connections. Pretty much any single din radio should fit.
EDIT: Whoops forgot the picture Its not a direct shot, but i think its the best picture i have of the radio.![]() there is this one too, but its kinda far away, but you can kinda make it out... ![]()

that dash kit had 2 different surround pieces. that one is for radios without a trim piece, the other one was for radios that you wanted to use the trim piece with.
I got a few pics of my radio in my bug. check out my chester link, i'm too lazy right now to cross post pics.

the kenwood kdc942u...picture above also hoooks up to any ipod.
i actually prefer it over the alpine pictured (i had it) for two reasons....one being the superior audio tuning...and two being the fact that you still get a cd player...for those rare occasions you want one... the biggest difference to me is the ability to search the ipod quickly....while the screen on the alpine can be much nicer...i can search thru my ipod much faster on the kenwood then i could on the alpine. both are great units....im just a stickler for audio adjustments like time correction...especially in the beetle |

if you purchase your new head unit from crutchfield.com, and have specified your beetle in the search, the adapters come included at no extra charge.
otherwise, you can purchase the dash adapter plates at a number of places, bestbuy.com, etc. |
