Thumbs down thinking of doing some in-dash nav

I've been looking into putting a doubledin nav system in my 03 TS sorta like what EVZBUG has done, but im not sure of the work required and id like to know if any one else has done this and if so how did u cut the center dash peice to make the system fit? and does it require any kind of special bracing and/or wireing? any knowledge/tips/or experience is much appreciated!

not trying to be negative nancy...

but in dash navs suck...

they take so much longer to recalculate and the map system updates are much more expensive then a garmin.

get a garmin...or if you have verizon...pay for vz navigator...

no in dash nav unit is worth that kinda work....even if it was easy...they still suck compared to garmins or vz navigator.

the only reason itd be worth doing is for a dvd player...in which case go for it...ive never done the process but ive seen it done...

the guy that i saw did it lost his two central vents....just be patient and do it right....use some wood to build out the top part...and then use filler and resin....

might just wanna get a in dash flip out unit....

good luck...sorry to not really answer your question

Question

I have installed an Alpine IVA-D106R in mine, single din so much easier install than a 2din build and provides a 7" flip out screen with dvd/cd player. You'll need the Alpine NVE-N099 unit to provide navigation (no roblems with recalc speed), key illumination can be set to red to match the beetle dash lights so looks really cool open or closed IMHO. Sorry not answering your question but think about it as an alternative...

i have a garmin and i dont like where it s****... hence the in dash nav, and ive got an iphone so no Verizion for me :-p and as far as the flip out units go, i dont particuarly care for how they look in the car, im not a big fan of aftermarket sterios, ironic that i want an after market indash nav huh?

that makes total sense...many people prefer the "coulda been factory installed" look.

i do beleive there is a pretty awesome gps program for the iphone...i know its expensive but i know it works well...and 70 or 80 bucks is better than putting all the time and money into a unit that your probably gonna be annoyed with.

i know the one guy said his worked just fine...but ive installed alot of in dash nav sets...and none have ever worked well or quickly enough in the situtation that you truly need it...

anyways. good luck with your decision.
