Question CD player won't play MP3 CDs

I have a '04 NB, with the Monsoon sound system, with a tape deck in the dash, and a 6-CD changer in the arm-rest.

the manual says it will play MP3 CDs, but I've had no success. when I put an MP3 CD in, the display says CDROM, but after a few seconds, gives up and won't play it.

I've tried a few variation on the CD-ROM itself, putting the files in folder, or all in the root folder. no help.

any pointers?

thanks.

I don't think the changer plays mp3 files. I know the in-dash cd players past 05 or 06 do, but its very rare to see a cd changer, even after market, do it. But I haven't played with a center mouted changer yet, so i dont know about those.

I agree with Toad. I don't think the CD Changers had the software installed to play a MP3 yet.... back then.

My 1998 has a 2005 or 2006 single CD player in the dash, it plays MP3 CDs but I don't have the extended magazine changer ... in theory it's just a CD laser that's reading data and the head unit does the processing... technically it could work.

I'll see if I can find someone with a changer and plug it up to my HU and see if it does work. If so it would totally be worth upgrading the HU in your car, I've seen them for $300-something on eBay.. which is where mine came from according to the PO. He didn't know it played MP3 CDs tho, he said if he had known that he'd have kept it!

I'm pretty sure that won't work, all cd changers except really high end one conver the cd to audio before it gets sent to the radio. So unless there's an optical or digital coaxial output on the changer, its sending the audio as regulat analog audio.

Example: I have a clarion cd changer that has an optical output, but I can't use it unless I have an external proccessor addon. The optical output would allow the cds in the changer to be processed by the 24bit dac in the processor rather than the 1bit dac in the changer.

Interesting, still worth the experiment. But I doubt it will work as you said.
