Just bought a 2001 Beetle TDI.

The previous owner installed a DIN radio, but instead of buying a simple conversion harness, they snipped the orginal harness and spliced in a new harness.

Unfortunately the radio was stolen so now I have a bunch color coded wires deep in the stereo hole.

I am assuming the best thing to do is remobe the entire center dash area and get in there and just start splicing in a new harness.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the stereo plug? I am also assuming the speakers need to be wired back to a common ground.

Any other ideas??

I have a feeling this install is going to be murderous.

if they're color coded to an aftermarket radio, all aftermarkets use the same wiring color scheme. shouldn't take too long.

hey, i'm not sure if this is what you are looking for or if you are still having the problem, but i took this pic of the top of my factory head-unit. please note that my car has the monsoon stereo, so im not sure if the hook-ups are the same across the board.

first the speakers are NOT a common ground. Also, all aftermarket radios don't support common ground, please don't do it, you will blow up the amp inside whatever you put into it.

also, if they cut the harness after the aftermarket splicing, the wires will be the same color as the new harness, if not, try this:
http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/VW-Wiring.pdf

Do NOT connect all the wires to the aftermarket radio, you can cause a failure to the comfort control module or ecu. ONLY connect the 8 speaker leads, 12v battery + unswitched, 12V ignition switched, ground, and dimmer (if the aftermarket radio has a dimmer lead).

I hope this helps!
