Default Swap Radios??

I have a question about our stock radios. i'm pretty sure I know the answer but before I invest in it I want to make sure I need it. Ernie has a VW Radio in him, not a Monsoon. I'm thinking about getting a Radio/cd/mp3 player from a 2008 and installing it into Ernie. Michelle Told me the vw radios don't have an amp in them, so before I get it, I wanted to make sure before I bought it. I did get the VW radio tools to remove my radio!! If I have to have an amp, where would I put it? I suppose there is a place for one? Thanks in advance!

Scott

The monsoon amps are located on the rear panel of the car where you flip the piece forward in order to access your spare. As far as putting an amp in, you can mount it anywhere you want but typically I see people mount them on the side of the trunk. Hope This helps a lil bit.

Hey Scott, I'm assuming you are going to use stock speakers and a stock radio (non-Monsoon). Right? Stock radios have a mini amplifier built in them, called deck power. They run from 5 watts per channel, to 50 watts per channel. Normally.
If it's a Monsoon unit, it will require the amp with it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Kurt,The radio I may be getting will come out of a 2008 NB, wich I am assuming it still Monsoon, so I will need to get an amp. I'm also assuming I can use the amp from an older NB that the 08? Thanks!

Talking Radio swap

Hi Scott,
I just changed out my old non-Monsoon radio/cassette with a brand new Monsoon unit I bought from ECS for about $38 + shipping. I also bought a set of Schwabben removal tools and the change out was uber-easy. I then took the car to Dirrito Bros. VW in Walnut Creek and their service guy Ricky put the code into the unit to take it out of safe mode. Thanks Ricky! The unit looks and sounds great (output is identical in terms of volume as the o.e.m. H.U. ) despite the fact that virtually every post here and elsewhere said it would not work. Sometimes you gotta go with your gut, and mine told me this would work and it does. Good luck with your swap!
