Default Safe?

As I was traveling to campus, my radio completely cut off and the screen read "SAFE".
What on earth does that mean? It's only happened once, but I found it fairly odd and would like to educate myself on the matter.

After I powered the radio off and back on, it was working perfectly fine again.

it means the radio went into SAFE mode (a security feature) and should have needed a code to be entered to get it working again - but if it did it without the code, good!

SAFE is what comes up after the battery is disconnected, prompting you to enter the radio code. Never heard of it just coming on though.

Weird. I've disconnected the battery several times to work on it and I have never been prompted. As I was braking at a stop sign it did that, though. Doubt it has anything to do with it.
