Default New speakers w/ 05 Monsoon HU?

Honestly, I feel like this has probably been touched on at least a few times, and I have searched but could not find the information I was looking for.

I have a 2005 NBC with the Monsoon headunit, but I'm looking to improve sound quality. Ideally I want to replace the stock speakers while retaining the Monsoon HU.
-Can I expect a big gain in quality using the Monsoon HU with a decent set of aftermarket speakers?
-Is it feasible and practical to add a small sub (8") using the Monsoon HU?

If more information is needed or if I can help in some other way, please let me know.

Thank you in advance!

I haven't personally taking apart a NB to make sure, but most of the time Monsoon systems don't run full range speakers. So just replacing the stock speakers with full range speakers (99% of all aftermarket speakers) would result in unpredictable sound quality. The Monsoon will usually have an audio processor (or crossover) to send signals to specific speakers. Bass goes there, mid range going here, highs go there. If you were to hook up a full range speaker to wires that the crossover is only sending say highs to, then at speaker would produce no bass or mid range sound. But like I said, without any experience with the NB audio system itself I don't know the exact setup of the Monsoon system in your car. I can only speak from experience from other Monsoon systems in other cars. (Bose systems do the same thing as well)
