For Christmas my boyfriend wants to buy me a head unit for my car. I have 2001 NB with monsoon system. These are two head units that I am really considering... Which one would you prefer, and why?

LOVE BUG - You got your pseudonym (user i.d.) fixed! Excellent! ![]() On your subject, Lucky You! Kellyyysayas has a thread running for doing the EXACT same thing with the EXACT same current head and set up. Find her thread, it has some excellent information! You should find it "Today's Posts" under "Quick Links" above. Don't remember the title but just lok for her name as the OP originator right below the title. Would find it and link it here but don't know ow to do that, yet! Tell her who sent you! Edit - There is probably a different way to do this, but this should take you there, via out of the Org and then back in! Need a new sound system. Good luck, Darlin'

hands down the pioneer.
jensen equals poop...no offense anyone however neither will give you the audio control that you could want if you want a premium set up. very few flip out screens have good sound control...as there just isnt enough room for it also keep in mind that with a flip out youll be blocking your middle two vents, if you dont need a cd player, consider the kenwood kiv 700 or kiv bt900. both have screens...albeit only 3 inch, and run ipods, zunes, thumbdrives with mp3s and other files, and also harddrives. its also incredible intuative to use. plus features called sound excellence, basiclaly giving you sound adjustments you may not even know exist...but will surely make the bug sound awesome. ive recommended this unit numerous times, so i apologize to those of you who are sick of my suggestions. its just a simple fact, single din flip out screens have limited space for anything, so usually internal features get left out, sure you get a big screen, but you usually get a crappy menu system, thats slow as hell, and very basic sound control. if i had to choose between the two id def take th3e pioneer, but take a look around at other options. i have the kenwood kiv bt 900. ill take pics and post them if anyone cares to see what it looks like in the bugs dash. otherwise, good luck |

I am looking for a flip up screen, although with research this may change. I understand it covers the 2 center vents, but that doesn't really bother me. Thanks again for the suggestions |

Pioneer because I would be too embarrassed to have anyone ride in my car and see a Jenson.
Back in my low rider & multiple subwoofer days, Jenson was the crap the pawn shops and flea markets sold to mimic the name brand expensive stuff us suburban kids could afford with Dad's wallet. |

well having the additional sound control might be perfect for you.
just turning up volume on something that isnt set properly could easy blow speakers again. a cross over will eliminate the wrong frequncies from trying to play thru the wrong speakers, which will not only sound better, but also protect the speakers. having cabin adjustments will help the sound better, speaker size adjusments will change q point out put of the radio....helping sound, and protecting your speakers. time correction allows you to align the time each speaker plays so it gets to your ear at the same time. then of course you have a 5 band eq to adjust...which if done properly will not only improve sound, but also save your speakers. aside from that, the pioneer, like most new flip out dvd players will need a video bypass performed in order to make the video able to play while drivin, which may not be the safest thing to do, but i understand at the same time. most pioneers require a switch and a pin be relocated in the harnss then wired to ground thru a switch. but some are unable to be bypassed at all. long story short what im saying is that if you want to watch video while you drive...you may not be able to. look up that model number and see if there is a video bypass for it. pioneer wont provide you with that info...so searching forums like avic411.com will be your best bet. the kenwoods i suggested simply need the parking brake wire attached to ground. if you want to do the video bypass. also keep in mind that all new flip outs are very slow in reading any ipod, and also are very slow in general function, you might get annoyed...so go get your hands on one before you buy. i also suggest having a pro do the install and set up. so you dont blow your speakers, as if you personally blew your old speakers, id say youre unaware of what distortion is, as distorion will generally blow speakers, so having a system set up properly will help protect the speakers from you (which isnt meant personally, lets face it, the bug isnt the quitest ride on the highway, its easy to play distortion when you cant hear it over roadnoise.) also avoid using 3.5 mm jack inputs and playing anything loudly, as it has a low quality signal and will be an easy way to fry speakers. its always best to find a radio that has a built in digital to analog converter that is high quality (24 bit) so your digital media sounds good...and has no distortion. when you use the 3.5 mm jack you are using at best the 4 bit digital to analog converter built into whatever (ipod, iphone, phone, mp3 player, laptop, etc) this would mean youd hook the device up via a usb or direct ipod cable, and the radio itself converts the music, so its not just amplifying an amplified signal like it does thru the aux jack. older alpine flip outs, that had a seperate "brain" were great units, but they are old enough that they wont work well with new ipods, thats th only flip out ive ever been impressed with. and i doubt theres enough depth to mount it all in the bug. again. good luck. |

WOW! Thanks for all that information. Don't worry I wasn't the one to blow the speakers, unfortunately Gloria came that way. I think my boyfriend plans on paying someone professional to install her head unit. I went to Best Buy, Walmart, and Pep Boys today to play with some head units. None of those stores had the one I am looking for. I really like the touch screen ones that don't flip out and would love if I could get one of those but as far as I know they don't fit in the bug :[ |

Haha yeah. I am always pretty aware that other people have different time zones. On top of not feeling well I'm having a very crappy day, thanks to a "friend" GR. I'm too old to be involved with drama and she's trying to play games with me.
