Default AUX - IN problems on my 2006 Bug

Hi,
I just bought a 2006 NB and was loving almost every bit of it, except I couldn't see any port for auxillary input. I then was checking something un-related, when I saw the port below my seat heater switches. All it needed was a cable with 3.5 mm(1/8") plugs, and I would have been set. So today, I managed to find such a thing, and was plugging it into my beetle with excitement (I prefer my iPod on random over any radio, except for traffic reports) when the damn (pardon my language) plug went right into the panel!!

I was thinking WTF?? (It's not covered under my USED car warranty) I also figure that this is something I could possibly repair myself. However, I can't seem to find where to open this panel to get access. In other words, where are the screws? I found a couple in the glove compartment, and a couple underneath -but they're no where near the location I want to get at, and I don't want to take this all apart for nothing.

Does anyone know anything that could help? Even if you point me to another thread that has an explanation or shows schematics or images (I WISH!)

Also, is there a way to get a repair manual for my New Beetle? It is an '06 1.8L TDI

Any help would be much appreciated. THanks

1) I think there is an exterior nut on the jack which holds it in place (sandwich style), I'll have to check mine. I'm sure you will have a considerable amount of dash dismantling to do to reinstall, plus what ever part is missing or broke. I have a link to a DIY thread I'll see if I can find.

Blend Door DIY

After reviewing the thread, I suggest you go to Post #3, I think you will be able to remove the lower controls alone and gain access to the jack. Possibly even just the bezel that holds the "down light" and jack. You will need a set of metric hex wrenches. If you use SAE you run the risk of stripping the heads of the screws.

This is a good thread to save because it basically covers dismantling the entire dash board.

2) You are referring to a Bentley manual. A number of places around the web for $80 (new '98-'10 inclusive). Forget eBay (althouth J.Arce beat me to one for $60) and Amazon. I have several links

Hi thanks for the tip! I ended up using a special ratchet screwdriver and taking my panel apart. Seeing the links gave me an idea of what to expect. Then I pushed the jack into the right position, while plugging it back in. Perhaps I should have used epoxy to hold it in place, but I was in a parking lot, and just wanted to fix it. In any case, I simply never removed the plug from the jack, and it works fine.

Thanks again, as it's saved me $150 (at least).

I'm going to order the Bentley Manual -because it's going to save me on headlight replacements.

Same darn thing happened to me today while I was trying to insert the plug into the jack. Talk about sad. Was the process you used difficult (I'm a newbie to VW and actual vehicle repair but not to handy type work)? Should I just take it to be repaired? Nervous I'm going to crack something or ruin the glove compartment. Also, did you have to do steps 1 & 2 in the illustration or did you just begin at step 3? Thanks so much for your help.
