Question Monsoon CD player swap

Hello all, I have a chance of buying a new monsoon CD player with XM radio box. My questions are as follows:

1-Has anyone done this complete swap before (successfully) XM and all?

2-Considering my 04 NBC is a non sat. radio ready, will the harness be the same and have the provision for the XM box?

3-Where is the XM box located originally?

4-Do all XM monsoon CD players come with the aux jack for mp3 players? This is a unit that came out of an 08 NBC

5-Do all Monsoon XM units control CD changers?

Thank you in advance for the responses. I am very exited about this mainly because I want to be able to play mp3 CD's and my ipod while keeping the stock radio look. I know an aftermarket HU would solve all the above issues faster and easier but I don't want to sacrifice the original look inside the car.

I tried to find a thread on this but I only found one from back in 2006 that didn't really answer any of my questions.

Thank you

Nevermind #3, found it in the Bentley manual. I'll check tomorrow for a connector there.

You're going to need the center panel portion of the dash that lays up on the horizonatal and contains the SAT antenna. It appears to not just be the same panel with a hole in it. There is one around the Org, but the gal wants a C Note for the panel and antenna, and I believe from memory the harness. May not be a bad price. Your biggest DIY is going to be the dash dismantle and reassembly.

2-Considering my 04 NBC is a non sat. radio ready, will the harness be the same and have the provision for the XM box?
Depends upon whether the XM was an option in '04, if so, it is. What won't be cabled is any harness that ONLY runs from the radio head to the XM unit, and the antenna wiring which will be specific to the vert. I have not found any SAT radio with a manufacture date early enough to have been incorporated into an '04.

3-Where is the XM box located originally?
You found that, good! I didn't know.

4-Do all XM monsoon CD players come with the aux jack for mp3 players? This is a unit that came out of an 08 NBC
Yes! But the XM feature did not come with all Premium Sound systems, and from my research these units also came with the AUX jack. At some point in time the Premium system went from six speakers to ten, but this is more than likely a feature of the external amplifier. I believe this occured in '05, but you can answer that. I have ten in my '05. Many ppl don't know they have the jack! lmao The problem may however be the '08. I am not finding any units for fitment prior to '08, showing fitment for '08 and up. I haven't found enough information to know whether the '08 will work in reverse. Sometimes wiring changes are made and one will work one way but not the other without wiring modifications. I had a GM newer unit, going into and older unit where all I had to do was clip an older harness wire. Don't ask, don't know, but it wouldn't work until I clipped the wire and then everything functioned properly. Other possibilities are that the lighting, i.e. red/blue may not be correct for the '08 and newer, the face plate may be a different contour or simply a different color. While ALL Monsoons were manufacturered by Delco/Delphi, they only started carying the name on the labeling in '08.

5-Do all Monsoon XM units control CD changers?
Yes, internal CD/MP3 Player and external CD changer, only way the SAT unit was produced.

Thank you in advance for the responses. I am very exited about this mainly because I want to be able to play mp3 CD's and my ipod while keeping the stock radio look. I know an aftermarket HU would solve all the above issues faster and easier but I don't want to sacrifice the original look inside the car.

See Notes above!

I can not say with any certainty that an '08 will fit in an '04, or anything before '08 for that matter.

Head Unit pics below. The first is of the SAT head unit from an '05, and the second is of the non-SAT unit from an '06, I honestly haven't found out if the MP3 badging indicates that is it MP3 CD compatible or if it indicates that the car has the Aux Jack feature, as I have seen non-SATs without the badging.

Update read, thanks. I may just have to take a chance and see if it works. I went to best buy yesterday to exchange a Nintendo Dsi that one of my boys got for Christmas and I went to check on the head units and came home more convinced that I don't want an aftermarket HU in our beetle.
They had some crazy stuff that do everything and anything for like $250. Funny thing is 15 years ago an aftermarket stereo would have came sooner than the first tank of gas.

I'll call you tomorrow as soon as I know what the deal is and what's available, got your e-mail with the wish list, my glove box lid is not that bad so I'll give you first shot

Thumbs up

My GB lid falls off when it's opened, but I'm not in a hurry. A new one is right at $100. I have doubts an '08 will work anyway. Pretty sure there were some subtle interior changes. You'll know first hand tomorrow. My interior design is identical to yours with the possible exception of the 10 spkr Monsson system. Except all my interior is black, where I believe yours is cream. Console, dash, side panels, etc. Every thing except the windshield surround, and I believe we both have pearl gray.

I need to see if I can find some pics of an '08 interior.

I installed the monsoon CD player with out much trouble, everything lines up, which leads me to believe the dash is pretty much the same. Everything works, even cd changer. I din't get the xm module which is ok with me. I still want to find a cheap way to hook up the aux, now that I know the HU has it, CD button cycles between 3 options: cd, cd changer and aux.
I'll try to keep this post alive. If any of you have any info on the needed cable to get the aux jack found on all 05-10 models please feel free to chime in.

By the way, if you need to get a radio code and the dealer won't do it for you free of charge, there is a site that charges $28 with 24 turn around.
My dealer wanted $89 to get the code for me.

Hi. This is a bit off your original question. If I take my '06 monsoon and put it in another new beetle, will it work if I lost my security code?

Nope, you need the code for the radio to work but it is not that hard to get

Look for a sticker on the side of the well where the spare tire rides. Should be there.

Not there. Will I have to contact the dealership and get it by the car's vin number, or by the radio's serial number?
