am radio antenna strong for 9 seconds

My 2005 Beetle with a Monsoon amp was hit in the rear and repaired. Ever since then, when I turn on the AM radio, I get a normal, strong signal, but 9 seconds later it seems that the antenna strength drops almost to zero. If I turn off the radio and immediately turn it back on, it again plays great for 9 seconds and then antenna strength drops off again. I can do this forever with the same results. What is the problem???

How much damage was done to the rear end i.e. was the roof line effected? Does the FM and CD audio still sound ok?

May just be a coincedence. If you or somebody you know has VCDS (Vag-Com) scan the radio system for codes, the radio needs to be turned on and the key also needs to be turned on - when the radio is being scanned the speakers will "bump". If you get open circuit codes your antenna base is probably bad.

My AM radio reception has failed completley (FM reception and SAT still work) and the radio is returning an open circuit code in the antenna. My problem is the antenna base located on the roof, the plastic shell is cracked and water got inside the base and the circuit boards inside are corroded very badly.
