Default Ipod Install

I picked up a Peripheral Systems iPod adapter for my 2004 New Beetle to connect in lieu of a CD Changer. Did the basic install last night and it works great (I had a similar unit in my 2003 Jetta Wagon), but have a couple of minor issues.

First, the wiring behind the radio is real tight. I unplugged the CD Changer "pre-wire" harness and plugged in the iPod adapter, but with the old CD Changer plug behind the radio, I'm about 1/4" from being able to push the radio back into the opening. I'm thinking I might have to separate the existing wiring loom, and tuck the old CD changer plug away better. Since it's hanging there, I'm sure its my problem. Any suggestions?

Second, I ran the iPod cable through the dash to the glove box, removing a "blank" rectangular panel adjacent to the slot where the owner's manual fits. The wire is just coming out of the opening right now, but I'd like to put a hole in the blank panel with a grommet and put the panel back in place. My question is can I get a grommet big enough to fill a hole I'd have to make in order to fit the iPod charge connector through it? I suppose I could take things apart again, and re-feed the other end of the wire through the hole (which is a round and a little smaller). What have other people done? I don't have a center armrest so can't route the cable there.

Solved #1 ... Pulled the radio out cut the wrap around the old wiring harness so I could separate the old CD Changer harness from the pack and tucked that up above the radio. Everything snapped in fine.

Still need help with #2. Anyone??

Is the Ipod end the Apple type end (like what charges the ipod) or the headphone jack type?

I'm about to do the same... I was thinking more like getting an Ipod dock and install it somewhere. but the glove box is a good idea too.... my problem is that I tend to skip thru songs so I'd need it handy

The end is the Apple type charging connector (it does charge the ipod while plugged in). At this point I have to hit play on the iPod to start the music, but once started I can skip back and forth through songs using the radio controls. I noticed if I start it on a long playlist (or I just "shuffle" all my songs) I don't have to hit play on the ipod the next time I start the car, it just resumes where it left off.

I had this same brand adapter in my Jetta, so I was happy with the performance. This is the Peripheral PXDP/PXHVW2 VW Direct iPod Adapter. Got it through amazon.com for $69 plus shipping. I'm using it with my wife's old iphone 3G.

I picked up some grommets at Home Depot at lunch today, so I thought I'd look at it tonight. Inside the glove box there was that small rectangular piece of plastic that popped out, the wire runs through that to the center stack where it attaches to the adapter. I was thinking I could drill a hole the size of the smallest grommet that would fit around the wire in the lower edge of the black piece of plastic, and cut a slit below the hole to slide the wire up. I'm hoping the grommet would overlap the slit so it wouldn't be visible. Probably not an issue since it's inside the glove box, but I want a clean installation. Looking for suggestions. If I had a center armrest, the ipod charging cord is long enough that it would snake back there under the console with no problem, but since I don't have the armrest in this car I opted for the glove box.

In my Jetta Wagon I hooked it up to the Monsoon unit in the back of the car and ran the wire up to under my center stack in front. The ipod sits on the cover to the ashtray. After living with that arrangement for several years in the Jetta, I preferred to hide the ipod somewhere (like the glove box).

This reminds me of cutting a hole in a desk for a computer with a SCSI connector.. the smallest hole is about the size of the side of the connector with a bit more room for the cable.

I've thought about the center console for the ipod... but I opted out on it for another storage need....

See I have a TX CHL (Concealed Handgun License) and there are certain places I can't carry. So I need a lock box big enough to hold my full size beretta and 2 extra mags. BUT since I would need to rebuild the inside of the console... I'm thinking to put the ipod in there and using the lockable rear cargo pass-through (make an inside wooden case) to store my gun
