Default Will a Monsoon AM/FM Cassette work in a non-Monsoon equipped 2000 Beetle?

My daughter's 2000 NB had a battery drain that I have tracked down to the factory non-monsoon AM/FM Cassette radio. I would love to find another factory unit to put in it, but all I have found listed on eBay are Monsoon units. They are priced very reasonably, $99 to $138. My question is, will a Monsoon Radio plug and play in my non-Monsoon equipped Beetle? If you have the radio I need, I would be interested in that too. Thanks for reading.

You might want to check a wrecking yard. I was at one at lunch time today and there was a nice non-monsoon w/CD in one of the cars, the guy helping me said anywhere from $40-$100. If you do, make sure you get the VIN from the car it came from. You might need that to get the unlock code.

I'm pretty sure they are both the same except for the monsoon screened on the front.

Was talking the some kid at Best buy for an adapter for my Ipod... anyway he mentioned that the monsoon had an amp? Didn't know if that was the case and if it's relevant in this question?

The Monsoon does have an amplifier, because the Monsoon system has more speakers, most easily identified by the dash speakers at the base of the windshield pillars.

Knowledgable VW authorized resellers and dismantlers, indicate CD/MP3 Radio, Mid 2004 (VIN 410661 and fwd) - 2007 (will require Dealer unlock if locked).

If your going to stay with the tape unit, don't be in a hurry to spend much money. I see them regularly on eBay for $35-$50. Most, if not all, of the HUs have the abitlity to add a 6cd Changer, and most, if not all NBs are all prewired , complete with mounting holes , in the trunk. The newer NBs and all NBCs for console mount 6cd Changers. The hole set up (new units) for the trunk unit is abt $100, and the console unit for about $60.

Thanks for the responses. I sold a good one with the code 3 months ago on eBay for around $60, only to find out that I should have kept it. My daughter is getting good at taking out the fuse when she gets out of the car and putting it back in when she get in it though. It'll be a great story for her to tell her kids when she has them.
