CD player head unit does not work on 2005 new beetle convert.

Hello,

I hope someone can help me with this issue. my head unit in my 2005 new beetle convert. will not accept any cds. It just gives a read error. tried new cds recorded cds and store bought cds. Nothing works. The multi disk unit will play them from the arm rest but not the head unit. The head unit and changer in the arm rest are both factory. Any Ideas?

The mechanism inside the radio is bad. The laser isn't working or the spindle motor quit. The head unit will need repaired or replaced.

I have not messed with the head unit cd players but my disk changer gives me read errors from time to time; I have blown it out with compressed air to remove dust. So far this has "fixed" my unit every time; at this point, since it may need to be service or replaced anyway... opening it up and cleaning the laser or blowing it out with compressed air might not be a bad idea to try... you never know! From the info below; it seems to indicate that the cd mechanisms are prone to failure.

A google search will reveal a number of other shops that do the same type of repair.; these guys put a new cd mechanism in the head unit for ($110.00);
