Default Sirus Receiver in a 2000 VW New Beetle GLS?

I have the standard issue 2000 radio w cassette player. Is there any way to install some kind of Sirus receiver in this Beetle? I would be fine with some kind of external receiver (if available) so I don't have to replace orignal radio.

Thank you,
George

I had a Sirius head unit. It was a Sony. If I had known that I would be getting another NB, I would not have sold it....I loved it!

Go to Best Buy, or your local stereo place, and see what they have. They will also have plug and play. But, if you're gonna do it, get a new head unit, satelitte ready, detachable face, front aux jack for your ipod or other mp3. You will be glad you did!

Here's what I did with a Sirius Starmate 5 radio, since you mentioned an external receiver...The only problem is in seeing the artist/song info while peering through the steering wheel, but the upside is, it's totally out of the way, and I have room on the other side for my GPS set-up when I use it (with MIG's custom made GPS mount ). I use velcro to hold the radio dock in place.

It takes a little adjusting to clear the bright headlight stalk.

I paid $20 for this radio directly from Sirius.

Hi again Miffmole,

Did you encounter any electronic conflicts from the Beetle when you installed the Sirus external receiver? Basically, what wires did you have to hookup for the Sirus receiver shown above? Thanks - George

All you really have to hook up is the antenna and the power source...as it comes in the box, that's a cigarette lighter adapter and the included satellite antenna. The unit will broadcast wirelessly to your FM radio on the frequency you select, with 88.1 as the default frequency. This can be set up in a just a few minutes.

Even though the instructions say otherwise, I have my antenna inside the car on the dash, and it works fine...

If you decide to eliminate the plug and wireless route, Bestbuy can do that for you for about $125, unless you know how to do it yourself. That requires a few parts that are not included in the original package.

Have a pic of how you have the antenna wire on your dash? Don't mean to put you out. Just curious. Thank you - Geo.

Here it is on another thread, George:
Please help with Satellite Antenna in a convertible.

Also, this is the page from the Sirius manual that describes the Direct FM Audio Connection, which is a better connection than the FM wireless connection:
