Default audio ups and downs

hey all, i have a 99 gls with an audio or power problem i need help with.
i have all factory gear and have added on two jl audio 8" subs and an amp.
the problem im having is with the volume, it randomly changes,. one minnute it's cranked...the next second it's fading, is this a power problem or a head unit problem?? i dont think it's as simple as putting a capacitor on the power, it's sound more like a power managment isue, im i right???

any help and possible fixes would be great :-)

thanks
jerry

Does the volume go up and down on all the speakers or just on what ever the amp is hooked too? If it's on all the speaker then it sounds like a head unit problem.

i geuss i should have added it only does it at high volumes :-)
the sound decreases and then after a while it will increase back up to where i had it originally, it really feels like it's power management isue, but im not sure...in have a second head unit and it does the same thing...just checked it out.
another question though, is the amp in the head unit or seperate in the car some where?? it's just a simple stock tape deck with changer controls..

It... uh... wouldn't happen to be occuring as you're changing speed, would it?

Some NB headunits had Automatic Volume Control that is supposed to raise the volume as your vehicle speed increases (it assumes at greater speed, there will be an increase in wind and road noise), and lower the volume as your speed decreases (so it's not still blasting full volume while you're sitting at a stop light).

If your headunit has AVC, you can adjust the main level (and possibly defeat the feature altogether) in the system menu accessed by pressing and holding the scan button for several seconds.

Just a thought. I'm not sure that's what it is, or not... or whether your particular headunit even has AVC. I just didn't want to see you spend a whole lot of time and resources researching this as a "problem", when it may actually be a "feature".
