Default Sound Deadener in the doors

I bought some RAAMat BXT and tried to install today. Unfortunatelly, it didn't go as planned

I wanted to do both inner and outter door skins, but had trouble removing the inner door skin panel. I undid all screws, but the bloody power window screwed everything up. I had no clue how to get that panel out since the window rail is connect to it.

I don't see the point of putting the material only on the inner one since it won't help my need and I'd rather do it once.

So, did anybody install something like that in the doors? I know I saw a picture of install on VWVortex somewhere few days ago, but I tried looking for it so I can contact the user but couldn't find it anymore

I bought some Spray-on stuff made by CAE for my doors. So i just sprayed over the wiring and stuff (i amsked off the motor of couse). The real thing is that i dind't see any difference in sound quality and/or deadening. I guess the spray was for more to stop rattling then deaden sound.

But anyway, yeah, good luck with taking that panel off, that panel has the window regulator rivited to it, and i'm pretty sure you need to unmount the window before you take it off. and i think there is a screw or 2 at the bottom of the door where the rails are.

You need to remove the window to remove the panel. I have only done it in my Jetta. It was pretty simple.

Remove the trim panel. About half way down there should be some large plastic plugs you can pop out. These are to access the clamping bolts for window. Lower window about half way to access the clamping bolts, loosen the bolts and lift the window up and out of it tracks. I am assuming that the VW engineers didn't do anything to drastically differant than the Jetta.

The best thing you can do for your door speakers is to install speaker baffles behind them. Crutchfield has them:

They will protect your speakers, cut road noise way down and tighten-up the bass. Best stereo mod for the money. Be careful that they don't interfere with window operation.

beetlejuice, do you actually have those? I read some comments on Crutchfield and they weren't so good, so I dunno. I did some more reading on them and they were mainly made to protect speakers from water and actually muffle the sound. Take a look at this thread: http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/...&highlight=XTC

Thanks TMielke, that helped out a lot! I did both inner and outer skins, but was kind of dissappointed by the affect. Although, one side was better than the other where I applied two layers of RAAMat and Ensolite foam. Looks like I'll have to do the same for other door.

Check out power window search for a quick how-to in another thread.

But yes, you do need to remove the glass to accomplish removal of the inner door frame. Undo all the screws, pop out the two big round plugs near the top (they're about two inches diameter or so) and roll your window down just enough to see the clamp screws through the holes where the plugs normally cover. Loosen the clamps, take out the glass and proceed from there.

I have used them in a couple of cars. After I posted that I read some of the comments on the Crutchfield site. Yeah, mixed reviews. I found that they decreased the boominess in the bass and lessened the potential for rattle in the doors. Bass preference seems to be very subjective - I like it very tight & thumpy. The really big improvement is in decreased road noise coming through the speakers when the stereo is off.
