Question Dash Speakers

From searching around, I see the dash speakers are 3". I am trying to re-use as much of my old stereo as possible (no way was I going to leave it in my trade-in). As I have yet to pull apart the dash and no luck with search, has anyone placed a bigger speaker in the dash?

Beetle currently has the Monsoon Tape Player no CD Changer

Old stereo stuff:
Apline 9847 w/ iPod controller & XM
2 x 6.5 Rockford Fosgate P162C
2 x 5.25 Rockford Fosgate P152C
Profile CA400M sub Amp
Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 2 10" sub in a home made box

The dash speakers are actually pretty good. Its the one's in the door you have to worry about. I think if you just replaced the door speakers with some nice three or four way speakers for lows, it would be pretty nice. Throw some door insolator in there while you're at it. Did you know that there is no speaker in the panel on the a pillar? What kind of crap is that? Why are they even there?

I'll leave the dash ones in there and see how the sound. Definetly a lot easier than replacing them.

I have no idea why they would even bother putting the grills on the a pillar if nothing is there. Probably the same reason no dealer in my area will sell me the radio removal tool.

Non-Monsoon NBs have speakers in the A-pillars... they just use the same panel. It's more cost-effective that way.

Ahh, my '05 NB (Monsoon) definitely had speakers in the A-pillars, as well as the dash. I say had because I've since replaced all the factory speakers. Although, I do still have speakers in the A-pillars. Ok, now I'm rambling, point is that there were definitely factory speakers located in the A-pillars on my car.

Just for future reference to any finding this thread.

I installed my stereo this weekend. I have the front dash cover off. A 5.25 speaker *might* fit in there but I doubt you can find one that is shallow enough. More than likely the dash speaker grill will have to come out and the new speaker mounted to the top of the dash cover. There are also 2 speakers in there (a mid/high then a tweeter) with each having its own wiring coming from the monsoon amp.

I still plan to try and mount something there sometime, so hopefully I will have some more to add to this thread in the future.

Clearly there are many differences in the speaker setup. My car had tweeters in the A-pillars and mids in the dash. In order to install the 4" mids (part of JL Audio 3-way components) in the dash on my car I had to cut out a hole in the lower cover to accomodate the speaker's magnet. I sealed the hole with plastic to keep the air out. Works well and the speakers sound awesome!

My 01 GLX came with the monsoon system. Whe I re-did the stereo I ran RF FanQ 6.5 comps for front and rear and add a 3.5 in the dash to keep the 3-way. For the dash we used the lower panel and added a weather baffle to protect the speaker. For the rear we mounted the 1" tw in the upper painted part and made custom covers to match the front a pillars grill.
