Default Dealer Charging to Get the Code?

Is this a normal practice, or did I mis-read my owners manual?

I swear it said something like "if you misplace your code, contact your VW dealer who will help you free of charge."

Well, my code wasn't misplaced...I just bought the car...but the radio card is in my manual, without any stickers.

Where were the stickers originally at? Perhaps I have a chance of finding them without having to pay $50.00 to find the code?

Also...the HU seems to have CD features, even though it's a cassette...is this standard, or did the bug maybe have a changer that I haven't come across yet (or was maybe removed by the original owner???)

Thanks all!!!

I thought the code was free but things could have changed.

You may be able to find the code in the trunk/boot area.

I got my NB used and actually went through this same thing.

As a last ditch effort, I called the dealership where it was orginally bought back in 1998.

The service guy was so nice and was able to locate it in the old files and paperwork.

Then he told me about being able to find a sticker in the boot/trunk area as well and sure enough -- it was there.

Boot/Trunk?

Meaning the back? Whereabouts was it at?

I lifted the hatchback and have looked ALL over for a sticker...but still nothing of yet.

Thanks!

A not about head-unit codes: If you ever have to jump-start your car, make sure the stereo is OFF. If it isn't, you can permanently damage it. It will call for the code but it will not respond when it is entered. At least, that's what happened with our first NB, a 98 GL. We also did not have the code but the dealer did not charge us for it.
