Default "Whats for Dinner?!

I looked first to see if there was a thread like this but there wasn't so here goes...
Perhaps there are several of you out there like me who get tired of deciding what to cook and always being in charge of the family menu! Aside from our tried and true favorites I am tired of the hassle of coming up with new and tasty stuff so I thought if we saw each others menus it might inspire the rest of us (That's the plan anyway). I 'll go first:
tonight we are having a sirloin tip roast with baby dutch yellow potatoes and fingerling carrots (smells good!)

What are you having? (I might like to have it tomorrow night)

OOooo, I'm no help tonight.

Wed's are night out at the Bacchus for wings and nasty nachos.

DK's GF gets out of class @ 9:20 and that gives Hubster time to get home and shower----we have really crazy schedules and this is the one night we know we'll eat together.

Last night though:

Pasta with a sauce made with chix stock, nutritional yeast, ground flax, 1/2 & 1/2 -- tossed with sauteed baby sweet peppers, red onion, garlic, it bacon and grilled boneless chix.

Cool Dinner Will Be Ready As Soon As I Decide What We're Having

That was the title of a chapter in some book by Erma Bombeck, who wrote the I Hate to Cook Book. In other words, I don't know. But if you just want a few suggestions--

* Borscht--not the Jewish vegetarian style but Moscow or Ukrainian style with meat and beets and cabbage and tomatoes and potatoes--lots of different vegetables. Healthy, too, except for the sour cream. Who's gonna blame you for a dab of sour cream? Time-consuming.

* Hortobagy Palacsinta--basically chicken paprikas stuffed into Hungarian pancakes, which are sorta like French crepes. Rather a lot of work UNLESS you have leftover chicken paprikas.

* Carbonnades de Boeuf a la Flamande--despite the long fancy name, a simple down-to-earth Belgian beef stew with beer. A plain green salad is good with it.

* Spaghetti alla Carbonara--spaghetti with pancetta or bacon, egg and cheese. High on fats and carbs, but boy, is it good! Not a lot of prep time, either.

* Shish Kabab / Shashlyk. You need to find good lamb. After that it's a cinch. You can get the rest of the family to help by starting an assembly line to thread the skewers: green pepper, onion, mushroom, cherry tomato and the (marinated) lamb. Serve with pilaff/pilav. Pilaff is easy.

In this house, its a joint decision much of the time. Armed with bbq and Kingsford charcoal on the patio ready to be lit.....chicken, steaks, pork loin roasts, tri tips, turkey breast roasts, and hamburgers can be whipped up in an hour at max. At the very last minute, a chicken caesar salad makes for a good dinner. We get home past 6, so there is never a 6pm dinner in this household....for us, thats too early to eat.

They were good! YUMMY!® even.

I used to be a chief, so cooking is nothing to me. I got bored a few years back, ate out a lot. I'm still not convinced that for three people it's cheaper to eat at home, unless it's boring food. And when you factor in time to cook, to clean up, to get the stuff from the store...time is money, after all.

But every now and then, I do like to cook up something that is not of the norm. So to speak.

Mombug:

* shrimp with feta in a tomato sauce (garidhes me saltsa, Greek)
* shrimp and finocchio (fennel, the bulb kind) in tomato sauce over pasta (Italian)

* low-country boil or crawfish boil (Southern/Cajun)

The last exists in variations from Louisiana to the Carolinas. Well, at least to Georgia. You just fill a big pot with soup greens and water (which becomes broth) and drop in corn on the cob, potatoes, sausages, shrimp or crawfish, &c. Then you spread newspaper over a picnic table and guess what? The best part is that YOUR GUESTS have all the work! YOU don't even have to peel the shrimp or crawfish! The newspaper is for the debris. If you prefer, you can just put out two big bowls for it.

had to go to Virginia Beach anyway, so we stopped in to the Aloha Hawaiian BBQ for an early evening plate lunch. they're doing well...don't think they've been open a year, and they've already expanded their building...probably the first time i've ever had a plate lunch on a real plate.

I had the Seafood mix plate (Shrimp, Mahi mahi, and BBQ chicken) and Lisa had the Shrimp & BBQ Chicken plate...of course, scoops of rice, macaroni, and a little bit of salad. really good.

good thing it's on the other side of the water.

Oh, Warren! Do you ever get to go to CAPTAIN GEORGES SEAFOOD HOUSE? I love that place! There are a number of them in the VA Beach Newport News area. I love them, miss them so much. What a great spread. I used to go to the one in Newport News all the time. It was better, IMHO, then the one in Williamsburg.
