Default Recipe needed for Coca Cola Float please?

For some reason I've never had the old American classic coca cola float before, so I looked the recipe up online.

Quote:
Scoop vanilla ice cream into a tall glass, filling half full. Top with your favorite cola soft drink, and gently stir in 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. Serve immediately.

Is this accurate? It seems like it, or does someone have a better recipe

Which means that the vanilla extract isn't necessary?

Good idea
Only not tonight anymore, and I don't have vanilla icecream in the freezer.

My grandfather got me hooked on Coke Floats in 1957. I've made (and eaten) a million of them but never used vanilla extract. My recipe has always been good quality vanilla ice cream and Coca Cola.

For some reason I picture these floats in those days.
Must be because of movies I've seen played in that era

Even without the vanilla, are the portions the same? Half a glass of ice cream and fill it up with coke?

Live it up and fill the glass 3/4 full with ice cream.

You think that was good? Now use chocolate soda instead of cola. You may need to look around for the chocolate soda but it is available. We have a product called Yahoo chocolate soda here.

Do you like root beer? Try it with root beer instead of cola. This is one of my personal favorites.

There are lots of variations but the amount of ice cream is always dependent on the individual.

You can make your own if you can get carbonated water there. I'm pretty sure you can since almost all of the water I got while in Europe was "fizzy" water. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:
6 tablespoons chocolate syrup
2 tablespoons whipped cream in a can
2-1/2 cups cold carbonated water
4 scoops ice cream of your choice
Additional whipped cream, optional
Directions:
For each serving, place 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup in a 16-oz. glass. Stir in 1 tablespoon of whipped cream and 1-1/4 cups water until foamy. Add two scoops of ice cream. Top with additional whipped cream if desired. Yield: 2 servings.

i'd skip the vanilla extract too - i used to work at an ice cream shop and these were so fun to make!

warning: make it over the sink - the soda reacts with the ice cream and fizzes!

Good tip!
Nothing happened though when I poored the cola in the glass as I saw the foam rise immediately
To make things worse, I've used coca cola from a can, which I'm told hold more bubbles than coca cola from a bottle.

I'm so sorry Marcia. We have got to fix that someday.

In my lil' world, rootbeer floats are more common than coke floats.

And I too haven't heard about the extract option. Just a straightforward 2 part recipe.

Heh, and there's really not much way around the bubbles except to not pour it directly on the cold ice cream. Tip the glass and pour onto the side of the glass so it'll run down into it. But still, there's going to be lots of bubbles.

NO Root Beer? Dang.

My dad owned an ice cream/food stand for a while. The absolute best is when the root beer freezes on the ice cream. I used to freeze root beer and then chip it up and make flurries out of it or I'd make root beer milkshakes. Absolutely heaven on earth...

Marcia, next time you are in the USA you must find an A&W Root Beer stand and get a root beer float.

Good tip Ron! And yup, no rootbeer here. Perhaps if I go to a specialty store and pay a fortune I can get it.

Will there be an A&W Root Beer stand in the state of New York?
