Default GLI VR6 into 2.0 auto bug?

Is it possible to swap a 24 valve VR6 from a GLI into the bay of my 2001 2.0 auto? I also wanted to do the 6-speed swap, are these possible? Also, what parts do I need to complete the swap besides engine, tranny, ECU, and guage cluster? I understand I can use the guage cluster from the GLI as well, but can the dash be modded to look factory? I don't want it to look like it was just stuck up there, lol. Thanks in advance, as I know that I asked a million questions!

Everything will bolt in thanks to the fact that the GLI and the NB are both Mk4 chassis cars. Maybe you'll need to move a couple of things around, but the swap has been done before many times. Head to www.vwvortex.com and search around for some of the VR bugs.

Don't worry about the cluster. You don't NEED the cluster to finish the swap.

Ive seen a VR6 beetle in person... wow can it move... but the instrument cluster looks so cheesy... he did a half job.

There are some threads here about vr6 swaps in beetles and then also a good one in the beetle section on vwvortex.com

you should read all of them before begining the process because there are differences between the two engines that become a little bit of a pain if you arnt ready for them.

http://newbeetle.org/forums/engine-swaps/

Well I went to vortex for you to try to link you up to a wonderful thread that goes through the whole swap really well and they are having all kinds of issues over there http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2662205 I would check back in and search the Beetle VR6 swap in a few days.

I've researched it a lot, and if I had the money to do a VR6 swap, I'd just do a turbo kit.

For the cost of swapping a VR6 you could have a 2.0T that could smoke a 12v VR6, plus not screw up the handling balance of the car.

I used to be really down on my 2.0, but if you take some time to read the 2.0L forum over on the vortex, you'll find a community of enthusiasts that are doing amazings things with VW's basic 2.0 8v motors.

The only thing between me and a 200+hp 2.0T is about $4000, less than a VR swap.

just a heads up that you will need to replace your shift assembly, pedal assembly, clutch cable, etc since you are going from an auto to a 6 spd.

Sorry but Shennanigans...

My motor stock has more Hp than the 2.0 SC or turbo, and in the almost 4 years since I have swapped it, has never really broke, or left me stranded. Just oil changes and maintanence.

The 24v vr6 weighs 160 lbs more than the 2.0, even less than the 1.8t. Consider in that my 6spd manual weighs about 30 lbs less than an auto box, and factor in the battery relocation to the truck, the 16lb CF seats, etc. My money says my car handles just fine

and on top of that if I chose to go turbo on top of that, I still can

When you get that turbo in, you are just going to have to let us here in Phoenix see it. Not only do I just think VR6s are totally yummy, but in a bug... wow!!!

I sure miss my VR6... but I would love to see it with all the HP

what does the suspension set look like for this upgrade... obviously there will be much more weight...

While I am here, is there any good sites or places selling these motors. Which VR6 motor should I be looking to swap into my car

There was a phenominal write up on this topic in the vortex forum... I wish I had saved it... I am thinking about the swap... A friend of mine is a real wrench head, and he has all the tools needed to do the physical swap... I am just afraid of all the wiring and fabbing... The other thing like someone pointed out, do I REALLY want to drop 8K plus into a beetle!? And so the debate continues... I really want a wrx...
