Default What other engines fit?

All,

First off, the site is great and I'm learning a lot about these little cars, but I am still pretty ignorant on NB's and it seems if anyone changes motors, they only go to the VR6. Are there any other motors that fit? Preferably without changing the motor mounts? I mean how cool would it be to stuff something like a porsche motor into a Bug?

Thanks,
B.J.

Well, any other motors require changes, of course.

But the VR6 engine can be modified all the way up to 700+ horsepower....

HPA Motorsports can take your standard beetle drop in a single (or twin) turbo vr6, put in a 4-motion all wheel drive system, etc, and have you squeaking 600-700 horse with over 500 lbs of torque.

Porsche motor no longer needed *heh*.

I know the old Beetles could strap a Porsche motor right in, but now , not so much :/

i answer this about once every 3 months.

1998 beetles, the hot ticket is a vr6 from a 1996-1999 jetta or gti. direct swap, including electronics.

1999-2005 beetles, anything from a 1.8t all the way to an r32 can/will fit. common swaps are vr6 (of all variations), and modding the 1.8t to extreme power levels. several on here have ditched the 2.0 for a vr6, and one or two more have the hpa kit.

my personal reccomendation is the mess with a 1998 or early 1999 nb so you don't have immobilizers to deal with. plus, 1998s and 1999s are hitting the market with bad motors now for cheap, and wrecked 1996-1999 vr6 jettas/gtis are cheap enough.

I've got a '98! I've got a '98!
(I love not having an immobilizer too!)
Justin, what you said here makes me even more determined to keep my Ladybug forever
God, I would love to drop a vr6 in her - that'd make her the ultimate sleeper. And from what I know she'd still be a practical daily driver.
Could you elaborate more on the "direct swap, including electronics" part? This is a very exciting thought! What might the price be for such a swap? (from junkyard rather than from the HPA)
And have you ever done a swap like that yourself? I'm sure I'll need an able mechanic when I do this in a couple of years or so...

im looking to replace the the motor on my 01 sport, the belt went out and well u know what happens after that. So im looking at 1.8t motor from gti an jettas, my questions is, can i just swap out the motor and use my stock computer ? or will i need everything, motor+ecu/accessories ?

also besides ebay, are there any other places i can look for used engines ?

any info would be very much appreciated ?

What do you mean by "including electronics" we need the ecu and wiring harness from the VR6, correct?

Thanks,
Sean
