Question 2001 engine 1.8T new beetle

Hi Group,
We are planning to replace the 1.8t engine in our 2001 new beetle. Will car need to be raised on hoist(s)?
Any advice before we start?
We are hoping to rebuild it and/or replace it?
Any Ideas?
Any Comments?
Any helpful suggestions?
We are looking for easy and simple rather than exotic or complicated?

Thanks for now,

kevin

There are some pictures on here somewhere of an engine being pulled. Drop the engine/trans as one unit out the bottom. If you pull the bumper/radiator support you don't have to lift it as high, otherwise the bottom of the car will need to be high enough to slide the engine out/in.

Main recommendation - get the Bentley manual.

I know I'm thread jacking a little here, but could someone elaborate on the difficulty level and number of disconnections/reconnections required. Our 2002 TDI threw a rod and the shop sounds *expensive*.

Basically, you have the following:

Engine:
Remove the cowl (extension into the engine compartment) to gain some room.
electrical - handful of sensors / solenoids (just label everything as you go).
Plumbing - a bunch of radiator hoses, nothing special
Air - Remove everything from the air box to the turbo, from the turbo over towards the intercooler and from the outlet of the intercooler over to the intake. The connections at the turbo are a little hard to get to.
Exhaust - pull the 3 nuts holding the downpipe to the turbo.
Fuel - remove the 2 lines from the filter to the IP.
** I'm going by memory so there is probably a couple other things **

Transmission:
Remove the axles ,the shift linkage and wiring to any sensors.
An auto should also have tranny cooler lines going to the radiator.

At that point, you should be able to support the engine, remove the motor/tranny mounts and drop it out.

I highly recommend getting the Bentley manual. It has detailed instructions showing how to do all this.
