Default need help

Hello everyone.
I am in need of some help. Our 2002 NB was stolen. It was a very nice car with lifestyle package 2.0 Turbo with color matching interior and rims(Limited Edition Color Concept).
Thank god she car was recovered and it turns out we did not have proper insurance so it is not totaled and we either have to get rid of it as is or bring it back to life and since my wife loves this car maybe even more than I we need to bring it back to life. Not to mention we still owe about $5K or so.

They stole the engine and the tranny or it was recovered before they took anything else from her. It looks like that is all that was taken. It was a 5speed car.

So, what do you think my options are my mechanic is saying the best thing for me to do is find a wrecked car just incase there are other stuff missing.

Here are some questions I have and I would greatly appreciate if I could get answers.

1. Since it was a 2.0 turbo car can any NB engine fit without major mods? We are fine as long as it drive good. Turbo, N/A or even diesel as long as it fits nicely.

2. Since there is no tranny either can I get a auto car and change it to auto? My wife hated the stick shift but she loved the car so it was OK.

3. Also do some Jettas come with the same type of engine and tranny? Can I ues the engine and tranny form the Jetta if I find a wrecked one. I guess that would extend my chanses of finding a wrecked car.

4. My mech said as long as the car is wrecked in the back, side or even a rollover is fine. Where do I find wrecked cars.

Let me thank you guys in advance for any info.

If it was a turbo model it was a 1.8 turbo. Your best bet is to find a complete donor car.

I guess you are right. It is a 20V Turbo. That is the 1.8 Turbo right?

Should be a 1.8t engine (code AWV) for that year. That is what Alldata is showing for GLS and GLX Beetles. Turbo S Beetles had the AWP engine.

I am in the middle of a similar situation trying to fit a different code engine into a car. Not working worth a damn, in fact I am pretty sure we are going to regroup and go another direction. It can probably be done, hell someone put a VR6 in their car so for sure it can be done. However the cost and hassles of making it all work seem never ending.

The AWV is one of the more widely used engines so finding one should not be a big deal. I would say from my experience, stick with how it came from the factory. Otherwise you are into problem after problem and still no guarantee that it won't throw codes when you are done.

I know there are others on here with way more experience at this so they will surely have some advice on Jetta and GTI engines working in Beetles.

It seems that the tranny changeover may not be as problematic. Search the forums for Transmission swap and I think you will be able to find what you need.

Good luck with your project
