Default 98 vr6 swap questions

i just got a 98 bug last night with a blown 2.0 im wondering what all needs to be done to swap a vr in it. can i just use the stuff from a mk3 VR? also since its a 98 what do i do for a cluster? and what about wiring? any good sites you can show me that will help with the swap?

hmmm, this is where i chime in.

find a 1998 vr6 jetta with lots of rot.
yank the motors out.
install the new motors.
change a couple wires.
???
profit.

srsly, it's that simple.

well, i would say to make it easiest, to use a 98 jetta. i've done enough of these, and i can say that if you use mk3 stuff on the 98-99 beetle, it makes it 100x easier in the long run (no immobilizers).

i've never heard of swapping bellhousings, only full cases...

any 96-99 mk3 vr will work. get the whole drivetrain, reuse your old axles.

96-99 transmissions are a direct bolt-up to the linkage as well, hence no need for another transmission, just swap speed sensor with the 2.0 unit.

also, once the car gets running, you'll need to code the cluster for 6cyl operation, anyone with a vagcom and 5 minutes can do it.

other than that, well, it's pretty straightforward, takes a weekend.

edit: if i was closer, i'd do it/help ya.

it's soooo easy mate. i did one in 7 hours once, but that was humming along juiced up on the dew and subway steak, egg and cheese.

Dang Cheat, you make it sound sooooooo e.z.

I'm almost tempted to try it myself on my day off next Friday!

Then on Saturday I could drop on a BT and run some 10's on Sunday!

Sorry for the mini thread jack, but in the process of a vr6 swap, are wires spliced & cut up,or is it a clean operation without damaging the oem harness?

it can be done cleanly if you know how to move the pins around, otherwise, some splicing is involved.
