Default VR6 motor swap... CONFUSED!

ok so i blew my 98 2.0 beetle up yesterday and ive been doing ALOT of research but im confused. i wanna do a mk3 VR6 swap. after reading some of the other threads i went ahead and bought my buddys 98 jetta VR6 5 speed for the swap. the VR is in good running condition but the body is shot ( got it very cheap ). but ive only been a VW owner for 4 months now so im new to this game. and dont know alot about the VW technical terms. so if anyone can help explain this swap in a "Dumber" way i would appriciate it! wat all do i need from the VR Jetta? can i use my original tranny and ingition cluster? PLEASE HELP ASAP! gonna try to do the swap early next week. THANKS!!!!

Is the tranny you have matched to the 2.0 an auto or manual?

At the least you'll have to play some games with vagcom to change the rpm reading when going from the 4 to 6.

PM "the cheat", he is the only one that seems to talk about this swap.

If I was you, I would bribe him with parts and cash to come help you get it done in a weekend. Its better to spend a little more and have help and actually get it done than to fubar it.

maybe then you'll be one of the few who actually completes the swap. no offense meant but i see tons of threads talk about it for a week and then the OP disappears.....

Good luck, take alot of pics of the process so the next guy can learn from you.

Not much ignition wise is going to fit, the 2.0 is a 4-cyl, the VR6 is, well, a 6.

98 manual nb=good candidate.

98 auto nb=have fun.

the vr6 itself will bolt up nicely, you may have to get the mk4-style mounts/brackets (rolling change in 98 on the mk3 vr), but other than that, the shift linkage will work from the nb, as will axles and lots of other things.

just completed one last weekend, takes a weekend easily with one person.

keep me fed, warm at night, and line my pockets with enough to cover gas, smokes and tolls, and i'll help.

you'll be using the vr transmission, i'll gladly help in exchange for your junk 2.0 stuff. i can fit a motor and trans in the back of my jetta sedan.

how's that for reasonable?

Sorry I don't know the answer to that.
Thanks for taking the pics, plenty more are needed.

Try sending a pm to "the cheat", maybe you should've given him a carton of cancer sticks and the old parts.

well, the hydraulic system stays unchanged...may need to make a line to fit, but other than that...that's it.

as for wiring, get an mk3vr bentley and a beetle bentley...that's all i can say. gotta understand, this is a business for me and a trade secret so to speak.

if i gave out all the deets, i wouldn't make any money.

anderson, get the motor in the car, next weekend (20th) i am free and can wire it up for a small fee.
