You're also gonna need to swap the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, axles, and I think the shift linkagw also. There might be more stuff too

I think i remember reading that it was more cost effective to swap in the 5th gear from a TDI

Is the big dif from a 5 speed to a 6 speed that the 6 speed has shorter gears? So the car can run through the gears faster? I don't really know about all that stuff.
My bug is paid off now. So even if that kind of things costs a lot its still cheaper than a new VW.

Great suggestion. I'm sure the OP would be very disappointed with any perceived improvement for the $$ and time spent to do this anyway.

The gearing won't really help you except for top end acceleration. The 6 speeds i've driven seem to be just like the 5 speeds until 3 gear, then they start getting shorter ratio.

here's the low on the 6spd...

1-5 is THE SAME as your 2.0. that's right, at 60mph in 5th, the 6spd is STILL turning 3000rpm.

6th gear will give you a decent chunk of economy, but nothing a taller 5th wouldn't give you anyways.

I'm still getting about 32 MPG on the HWY so I'll stick with the 5 spd I have. But I understand....3k RPM at 60 seems a bit much.

I'm at 3000 rpm @ 70 mph in my 6 spd and I know of one for sale with 69k miles on it. I believe they want $1500 for it.

I would look for one that was totalled or with a blown engine, you will need all of the parts. What you dont use you can sell.
